SP1 - My Story & Ordeal

This is a continuation/update/final report on my original thread - Error Code 800736B3 on SP1 Update

I thank everyone for your help - especially Corrine. Hopefully my experience will help someone having similar issues installing SP1.

I tried ALL suggestions made to get SP1 installed, but nothing worked.

Thank God I have a retail DVD of my Win 7 64 bit OS. I performed a repair install using the tutorial on this site. From past experiences with other Windows OS, I always thought that I had to boot from the original installation disc to repair problems with Windows. This tutorial was excellent. Thanks Brink!

The repair install went well. The 63 updates I had to install afterwards were a different story. I thought I could download/install them all at once - WRONG! I got a failure upon restart. I had to install just a few at a time. Several updates would NOT install unless they were the ONLY one selected. EVERY update batch I installed required a restart. This took a LONG time.

I finally got to the biggie after all others were done - SP1. Before attempting to install it, I ran sfc /scannow & found no system file errors. I then ran the System Update Readiness tool. I performed a manual install of SP1 from the file I had downloaded from Microsoft. --- SUCCESS! - SP1 is now installed.

The only after effects I suffered was a HD that was about 40% fragmented, which was easy to fix. The other one I'm still working on: I have Win 7 32 bit on a VMware virtual disc & the NIC has been alienated from my network. It sees no available networks - but that's for another forum. That is minor compared to the experience I've had with SP1 during the past 3 or 4 days!

Thanks to everyone that contributed!

Why did not install SP1 after doing the Repair Install?
As there are only about 10 updates after SP1.

I think both posters somehow missed it. SP1 DID install after the Repair Install.

I had 63 updates to install after the Repair Install before I got to SP1.

Why did you not do this?

Step 1) Repair Install.
Step 2) Install SP1.
Step 3) Install Updates (about 10)

Because it didn't occur to me that the 63 updates (that Windows Update informed me that were needed after the Repair Install) may have been included in the SP1 update.

You're saying that they ARE included? If so, I wasted a lot of time.

Should I say "Ouch", "Duh", or both!?

I hope there will never be a next time I have to do this!

Thanks for the info.
