I got the same 6 updates flash up earlier and couldnt find any info on them.Up to now have only installed the April Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - April 2011 (KB890830)

Yes the information pages are all there now.Installed them all apart from the (Kb2522422) which seems to only be relevant for people using cannon printers.Installed the others one at a time, 2 required reboots and (Kb2492386) changed my custom start orb back to default.No other issues at present though.

Well, actually you do. Some updates of theirs have been known to botch systems, so having the choice to apply the updates or not is a choice.

There is always a choice, that is why each update has a checkbox to either enable or disable an update. The mere fact that it might not be in MS's vested interest to do anything wrong in this regards, does not mean that they couldn't. I have never known or heard of any person or corporation in ~ 2,000 years that was perfect. In any case, not all updates apply equally to all computers.

what i can't understand is why are they offering us updates for canon printers which have problems with ie9, even though i don't have a canon printer nor ie9?

plus they're always offering me updates for the whole office suite, even though i've only got word, excel and access installed.

don't they check what software and hardware each user has, before offering updates?

seems daft to me, but then, what do i know? :huh:

Whats even worse is you can only avoid installing the updates for so long like the cannon printer issue, and you just know full well its gonna be included in the next service pack so sooner or later your gonna have to install it.:D

Whats even worse is you can only avoid installing the updates for so long like the cannon printer issue, and you just know full well its gonna be included in the next service pack so sooner or later your gonna have to install it.:D

It may get installed at the next SP, but until then, you can always hide any update that you don't want, and forget about it.

yeah, i guess i'm just lazy - i know i can hide them (i've hidden loads!) - but why should i have to?

it's not a serious rant or issue, but one that i come across regularly...

I don't recall if all were critical or not.

No problem with the downloads and installs.

that's another thing that regularly puzzles me about windows update - how do they decide what's important and what's optional? :confused:

I would guess it preventative - you might enable this software or install that printer later. If it doesn't solve a problem I am having, I usually decline and hide it.

If I recollect correctly, under XP, there were some updates you could not hide. I think at least you can hide more now.

The only optional one out of this batch I installed was the advanced format HDD hotfix as I do have some of these.
