Followed the recipe & it's worked a treat. I can't thank you enough for your yeoman's job.

Now after I install regular updates:

Do I leave the SATA AHCI Controller to run on the Microsoft drivers?

    Should I install KB982018?

If (and before) I am to install KB982018, I would like to save the present image and restore it onto my old hdd as a working backup in case things go tits up in the future. No reason why that shouldn't work, is there?

    That got the sucker! :)

The only time you need to install the Intel drivers is if you find the system slower than it was with them - in theory they are not required.

Have you done a Check for Updates yet? - there's only a need to install KB982018 if it shows in the list there. (the KB itself is pretty old so should have been installed long ago)

Yep, installed 9 and hid a few old ones & those related to Junk filters, as I don't use Outlook.

    Thanks again for your tenacity!

Great! - but you should have been offered IE10 and/or IE11 as well.

It's been a pleasure - and an education - working with you. Thanks for your forbearance while I groped around.
It will hopefully help a lot of others who get the same problem. These errors are not uncommon, but the failure to fix a few variants has been frustrating me for a couple of years!

    Thanks for the assist.

Ah, I meant 9 updates. I already had IE11 - but a proxy had somehow installed itself, and I took it to be another symptom amongst the others until I sussed it last night.

I'm glad to have offered you a successful testing ground & result as there are a few out there with similar symptoms, MST drivers and shdd migration.

In reference to a couple of the question you asked along the way, that never got answered....

    1) You should be able to tell which languages are installed from the language options interface in Control Panel - or what's offered (or not offered) in Windows Updates
    2) The 30-odd versions of a .mui file in System 32 are there to avoid the card manufacturer having to release different language versions of the drivers - best left alone.
