How to remove Windows 10 upgrade updates in Windows 7 and 8

Here's a registry patch for Windows 7 to completely hide the "Get Windows 10" icon from the taskbar. Also, I founded this in a Maximum PC magazine. Also, when downloading the registry file, the web browser would think that it's harmful, but it's actually not harmful. Just click "keep", or something similar to that.

As far as I know that file only works on 32bit windows. In Wow6432Node 64bit Windows 7 also needs:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate]
"DisableOSUpgrade"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU]

Hi Helel,

If you want the WU client update installed, you only need the latest as they replace the earlier versions anyway. KB3138612 or the June update rollup will give you the latest.

Hope that helps?
Well, since I'm using WU to update my Windows, I think it's a good thing to have it updated, right?)
Thanks for reply!

Patches containing W10 are always those that are classified as Optional and Recommended.

I read that several users have decided to postpone the patch KB3159398 for certain problems that it causes :
https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1666296-beware-known-issues-with-update-kb3159398?page=1
From what I've tried to understand it is that the patch does show hidden files that are restricted to other users, change permissions or something like that. And that is inconvenient for business/office users. Or for home users also affect? Frankly I do not know what it is that GPO  and if I'm wrong could explain me it exactly what the trouble with this patch.

From what I've read, if you're using a standalone home PC which isn't connected to a Domain then the update won't cause any issues (hopefully). I believe it only affects systems which are joined to Domains.

GPO means Group Policy Objects, these are set using the Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc).

That means that affects those who handle or are connected to some web pages(Business way). Right ?

I do not think so, I'm not connected to any domain. I'm just a basic / standard user.

I am curious as to why KB3161608 (June 2016 update rollup for Windows 7 SP1) appears on many lists here. I didn't install at first because it didn't originally list what was included, but looking again, I didn't see anything particularly onerous:

This update package fixes the issues that are documented in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles:
I understand many folks don't install anything that doesn't relate to security, but many issues involve compatibility with hardware / software they may or may not have. My approach is, as long as it's not doing anything I don't approve of (i.e installing new OS, telemetering, etc.)

I don't know if anyone else does this but Belarc Advisor provides an easy way to list all missing updates as well as installed updates. I check this list every once and a while to see if anything snuck by. Being searchable, it makes it much easier to see what's in / out than scrolling down in windows.

The OP originally included updates to the Windows update client. As these have continually been released they've been included in some users updated lists. As the update rollup includes another WU client update then it's also been included for anyone who wants to completely avoid them.

GWX control panel works well. Ultimate Outsider - Software Downloads

GWX Control Panel has been mentioned extensively in this thread. There's also "Never10" from Gibson Research. Those stop your PC from having Win10 installed.

But, AFAIK, they don't stop any of Win10's features (Tracking) from being added to Win7 and 8 which MS has foisted upon us in various other KB's.

The OP originally included updates to the Windows update client. As these have continually been released they've been included in some users updated lists. As the update rollup includes another WU client update then it's also been included for anyone who wants to completely avoid them.

I was just curious as to what was in the various WU fixes, changes, updates, etc that were the cause of concern.

In all the WU clients there has been a wu.upgrade.ps.dll file included. These can place a Windows 10 offer in the Windows update control panel. However, this doesn't seem to do anything unless KB2952664 and KB3035583 are installed. Haven't looked into it in detail but they all seem to work together.
Those updates also add the reg/group policy settings to avoid the upgrade when set.

Personally, I don't have a problem installing these as they do improve my update scans on new installs.
But some people want to avoid these updates completely, which is understandable.

I'm sure all these things will be removed after the end of the month anyway. There won't be any need for them.
