how do i know if i have SURT installed, and if i do, how can i run it? i'm not entirely sure if i still have it, and i'd like to avoid having to do this rather lengthy install if i can. it's been on "Initiating installation..." for the better part of an hour now.

EDIT: never mind, it literally just finished installing. got "Installation Complete", nothing more. what do i do now?

    Hi Freecom,
    its the checksurlog.

Any way been reviewing my previous comment re the permissions on WMP, which is what is killing WU according to the log.
in the screenshot you posted it stated
    Unable to list current owner
IT should be showing Trusted installer, see screenshot front page should be like mine.

Also showing in the WUlog were updates to Microsoft Security Essentials, thought you were running commodo or is it just thier firewall?.

    where do i find checksurlog?

i don't see your screenshot (maybe you forgot to attach it), but i get what you're saying.

i'm not using Microsoft Security Essentials, but i'm keeping it updated anyway on the off-chance something goes wrong with COMODO Internet Security, or they go out of business or something like that.

this is what my security tab looks like for wmpshare.exe.

    Hi Freecell,
now that the Comodo restriction has been removed can you retry the instructions in post 48
    (reset permissions).

Noel also mentioned a gp hack.
As your version shouldn't have GP i dont know if the following will work, it only lists changes
    from an elevated command mode
    gpresult /Scope User /v
    gpresult /Scope Computer /v
