    Hi Freecom,
can you check the permissions on that, and oleacc which i also dont have UNDER this location.
mine are in system32 and winsxs.

Would you also check your AV logs and see if they have blocked/quarentineed anything

umm... wow. this picture i have attached explains a lot lmao. now i feel like a flipping idiot.

i think i had COMODO block this process a long time ago because it kept running up my CPU for whatever reason. used to actually share media between my computer and Xbox and occasionally some other computers in my house, but when i stopped doing that it still ran up the CPU, which was pretty annoying. i'll try unblocking wmpshare.exe and see if that makes the update work. (EDIT: still can't change ownership of wmpshare.exe to administrators after unblocking it - says access is denied.)

    as for the permissions:

    • oleacc.dll: everything allowed on SYSTEM and Administrators, read & execute and read are the only ones allowed on my account. which doesn't really matter, since i'm the only account on my laptop and it's admistrator. went on Google to look up what this does, apparently it's used for Windows accessibility options or something.
    • userenv.dll: same thing. used for managing user profiles, apparently.

COMODO has never picked these up as any sort of malware on any of the times i did a full scan, and i have it on a pretty high security setting.

i edited my last post, but the edit was short and not very noticeable, so i'll just type it again. even after unblocking it from COMODO i can't switch ownership of wmpshare.exe to me so that i can set permissions.

also, i'm getting the error 80072EFE now after restoring the last update i couldn't install. since it's supposedly a connection error, it's probably my cable acting up again... i'll try again tomorrow, too tired and i don't want to get yelled at by relatives for having to restart the router trying to troubleshoot that

Wouldn't worry about the ownership, its not important as long as your security updates are installed.

If its your cable, resetting the router wont help

    Buy a CAT5 cable

nah, sometimes it's my cable (i think it's actually frayed somewhere, i ended up taping that), sometimes my powerline adapter, and sometimes it really is my router acting up. i'd know about the latter because my brother and sister would suddenly start complaining because they can't game anymore lol.

i'll try installing the previous update, but i'm about to go to bed so i'll check on the result tomorrow.

thanks for the suggestion on the CAT5 cable by the way, i'll try looking into that.

just woke up to an 80070005 error on the update i tried to install last night. didn't think it would be as easy as removing wmpshare.exe off my block list.

    Hi Freecell,

Have you rebooted since removing the Commodo block, if not do so.
    and try updates again.

    Try uninstalling WMP again.

Then lets have a look at your last windowsupdate log.
Wouldn't hurt to run scannow and Surt again.

yeah, i restarted after removing the block and the update still didn't work.

uninstalling WMP didn't work either, same error as last time.

i'll get back to you on sfc /scannow and SURT. i have to run sfc in Safe Mode (it's never worked when i'm not in it) and i think i deleted SURT, so i have to redownload that again.

EDIT: sorry, i forgot to attach my update log.
