    Windows OEM License Activation Question


    Hello,

    My activation problem has been resolved, however I am trying to understand how it was resolved.

    My laptop came with an OEM Win 7 key.

    I recently upgraded my laptop and did a clean install of 7 (not from recovery CDs), entered my Windows Product Key, but Activation failed. I figured its because of the hardware changes.

    Then I tried the automated phone activation instructions, which I expected to fail, but it succeeded! I suspected Id have to talk to someone, explain that my PC had a hardwre change, but none of that was required...Anyone know what goes on behind the scenes of the phone activation?

    Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

    Windows Genuine and Activation Issue Posting Instructions

    Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.

    Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

    Please post the report anyhow - there's something wrong here, since the Recovery media are supposed to self-activate.

    You cleverly entered the Key from the COA sticker - most people (for some reason) use a key found with a Keyfinder app, which most of the time is the manufacturer's OEM_SLP Key, which only works with the Recovery media (and is already installed if that's used).
    The first time the COA Key is used it may require telephone activation. After that, so long as the same hardware is involved, then it will activate OK over the internet for the next 4/5 times. It will then require telephone activation again. There is also an element of time-dependence involved (2/3 activations in a couple of days will make the servers twitch!)
