    Hi Aby452,

Do you have an SP1 install disc,
The corruption appears to be in the "hives"

We should be able to correct the problem using a repair install -- NO loss of your data.

    Hello,

I should have listened to your advice to attempt Repair Install earlier. But, I still probed all possible options before that. Well, I learnt a lot in the process. Eventually, I was able to get "Windows is up to date" under Windows Update and I've taken a system Image of this stable system now.

Even after Repair Install, two Windows Update were particularly notorious - Update for IE 10 and Update for IE 11. Eventually, I was able to get over them using links https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/2818833/prerequisites-for-installing-internet-explorer-10-in-windows-7-sp1 and https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/2847882/prerequisite-updates-for-internet-explorer-11
