    Thank you 1 + all.

But I think I've been screwed. I rang up MS to see if they could assist - worse than useless, not a clue. But the Belarc software is good it reports Product ID as ** REMOVED* with a KEY of *REMOVE*. So why doesn't MS pick this up at authentication as a fake ?

I'm guessing the ThinkPad had a Retail Win 7 OS which the seller has kept and palmed me off with the fake . The many many DCMA notices attest to the efficiency of the con with the fake Windows Ultimate.

eBay & PayPal will SLAP the seller & reverse the transaction.

    Do i need this ?

I hope it works out for you, but in the future, if you buy a computer from a known-shady place for licensing....ask for proof of the license, or make sure the computer has a COA sticker with a visible key.

The MGADIAG tool would - this is a known leaked product key. SLIC tables don't tally.

Alas you have to take what the Seller says at face value...if they say its 64bit 7 Retail and then no install disks arrive. Yes you know something's up.

Its that smell of red hot poker....

(anyways eBay has tightened up its act with serial sellers of fake software; I guess the litigation got just too expensive)

    I must be dumb.

Why doesn't the MS licensing empire just cancel the key ?

I am sorry to hear the MS Customer Service would not help when you are trying to assure you have Genuine software. You should be able to ask them directly to check the Product Key to see if it is Genuine retail, and if so they should open a Support case to get it correctly installed.

If PayPal is willing to refund you and return the laptop then you're not out the cost of a new OS. If not (or for others finding this via Google) then if there is any COA sticker showing the machine once held a valid copy of XP or Vista then you qualify to use Win7 Upgrade version to reinstall. You can still get the Home Premium Family 3-pack of licenses for about the price of one from legit retailers like Buy.com, Newegg or Amazon mainline.

But I would wipe the HD first with Diskpart Clean Command to clean the boot sector of any bad code, from DVD using DISKPART At PC Startup. Then if you use Upgrade version you'll need to do the quick registry workaround given here to activate Upgrade version on a cleaned HD: Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

If you have confidence in the rig's hardware you could also buy a retail OEM version which is comparably priced to Upgrade version but locks to the mobo once installed, whereas Upgrade version can migrate for life..

That's why you ask for proof or you pass on the item. If they weren't going to make it well known they had proof, then "you know something's up" before you even bid. Fake licensing is a very well known problem on Ebay...so if they weren't jumping through hoops to prove the licensing, you already know to be suspicious and likely move on.

    The joke is on me.

Never ever underestimate the stupidity of Sellers ( & Buyers ) on Ebay.

All Lenovo Thinkpads come with Windows pre-installed. You cannot buy one without.
The CoA is no longer on the bottom, its now in the battery compartment.

I have bought a T410 from the deranged.
They have replaced Win 7 Pro 64bit with JUNK Windows Extreme Edition R1 torrented off the Internet.

    Shoot me.
