Hi ,
hope someone could help.
I foolishly did an upgrade of my Java , didnt complete fully by rebooting PC at time , then continued to try an upgrade of my pctools spyware doctor antivirus which seemed to almost complete then it did a memory dump & loaded me back up into the system recovery. I cannot now get back into windows 7 .
Tried startup repair but windows said unable to automatically repair.
Tried system restore but don't seem to have any restore points to restore to ?? presume my fault here so then tried the following as I cannot get into windows
Windows 7 - Startup Repair Infinite Loop Recovery
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/139576-startup-repair-infinite-loop-recovery.html

Still no joy as when I did a restart just loaded back into system recovery options.
Is there any way at all I can restore without having to do a restore back to factory settings ?
appreciate any help

Have you tried running chkdsk /r from the Command Prompt window of System Recovery Options? It can take awhile to run so be patient.

No , I havent tried that yet I did try the windows memory diagonostic tool but no issues found , also when I did the Startup repair it said could not find a problem but did say in the diagonistics "the OS version is incompatible with startup repair" just in case this helps.
I'II try the chkdsk /r & see what I get from that , thanks

tried chkdsk /r but said " the type of file system is NTFS, cannot lock current drive , windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected "
any ideas please ?
just realised in x: so did a cd to C: & tried from their but again said locked drive but said the volume is in use by another process. It then says that I can run if volume is dismounted but this would mean all other handls would become invalid , then gave me option to dismount on this volume I said No at this point it also asked if I would like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts , again just said No at this point.
Hope this helps the advice you can give me

Tell it go ahead and dismount the volume or check on the next system restart. Either is acceptable.

tried chdsk /r , completed all the stages , said windows has made corections to the file system , then showed a load of information on disk space etc , I then exited & did restart but this just took me back to the Startup repair menu where windows stated cannot repair automatically .

Appreciate thoughts & any more advice , really would like to save files etc before having to do a factory rest etc

thanks for help so far

Copy out your files now using Win7 DVD or Repair CD: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/93347-copy-paste-windows-recovery-console.html

Try booting into Safe Mode.

Make sure Win7 partition or its 100mb System Reserved boot partition (preferred) are marked Active: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/71432-partition-mark-active.html
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2083-system-repair-disc-create.html

Then run any offered repair from the DVD Repair console or Repair CD. If it doesn't offer or repair fails, boot back into Recovery Options list to run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times with reboots: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105541-startup-repair-run-3-separate-times.html

If no OS is found to repair, open a Command line from Recovery Options, type:
bootrec.exe /fixboot
bootrec.exe /fixmbr

Now try the Repairs.

System Restore should be automated by Win7. iF not, try running it from the Recovery Tools list on DVD/CD.

Try running System File Checker from the DVD/Repair CD Command Prompt: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/139810-sfc-scannow-run-command-prompt-boot.html

If no joy, run the Factory Recovery partition from boot (preferred) or from disks made at setup. Or you can go completely clean by wiping the HD to http://www.sevenforums.com/installation-setup/125874-re-install-windows-7-a.html#post1086729

thanks for info , seems bit daunting but will check the DVD that came with PC , load it & try & see if I can get the Windows recovery console & copy & paste as you mention , will let you know when back home monday how I get on , thanks for great advice

In Diskpart select each partition to Detail Partition to determine which is currently marked Active, as it's possible the Recovery partiiton was set Active at factory and needs to remain that way unless it won't repair.

The commands on the Disk in focus are:

Select partition 1
Detail Partition

then select partiiton 2, etc. Post back what these find.

You only have one HD, correct? We can assume then that Partition 2 is Win7 and would be marked Active if Recovery Partition was not marked Active at factory, remains so, and will not repair with 3 separate Startup Repairs with reboots.

Thanks for the above , checked partitions as you quoted:
partition 1 :Type 27 :HiddenYes:Active :No
offset in bytes :1048576
Volume 2 D label=Win_RE NTFS 9GB status:Healthy

partition2 :Type07 :Hidden No : Active Yes
offset in bytes : 10487232000
Volume 1 C label=Windows7 NTFS 455GB status:Healthy

yes only have 1 HD

so guess now proceed , close prompt & see if any repair offered & if not then try reboot 3 tims from recovery options ? thanks again

tried startup repair 3 seperate times with restart , presume selecting restart as opposed to shutdown & power back up ?
also I did this with the wins 7 CD still loaded & selecting to boot into this each time ?If not correct then actually tried removing CD & tried startup repair without CD loaded also , still no good in both , as startup repair could not detect a problem.
Do I now need to try the cmmds from the cmmd line ?
bootrec.exe /fixboot
bootrec.exe /fixmbr

& do startup repair again 3 times from the recovery options screen again ?

thanks for help

I'm no guru by any means but perhaps the restore command will work from the cmd prompt in safe mode if you can get there?

C:\Windows\System32\rstrui.exe (C: being your boot drive)

You can try to start Win7 each time rather than boot back into the DVD as often Repair is required only once or twice.

Does it find an installation to Repair when you boot into the Repair console?

The commands given are used to jumpstart the repair utility to discover the OS if it doesn't, although you can try them anyway.

Did you try running System Restore from the Recovery Options list on booted DVd/CD?

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode by tapping F8 at bootup?

I don't think you can rule out infection so if you can get into Safe Mode install Malwarebytes to run a full scan. If not you can run a bootable AV: FREE Bootable AntiVirus Rescue CDs Download List

From Safe mode you can then run SFC, or run it from Repair Command line after trying startup Repair again: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/139810-sfc-scannow-run-command-prompt-boot.html

Startup said could not repair automatically , then when I went through Repair console it said it could not detect a problem.
I then went through reapir console (off wins 7 CD) & selected restore, this time as apposed to no restore point when just booting up PC I was offered restore points , I selected a one prior to issue date , scanned found no issues & have restored sucessfully & rebooted back into windows 7 , feel bit of a fool for not trying restore previously when I was in repair console but you learn ...LOL
Like to thank you for your guidance & great advice wouldn't have gotten to this point without help , thanks

Haven't gone through your link of things to check & do yet as I've discovered that the setup files for spyware doctor is corrupt so trying to uninstall but won't let me uninstall through control panel , trying restarting PC then pressing F8 but doesn't seem to offer option to boot into safe mode only offers booting into hard drive or CD do I therefore need to insert CD again to then boot into safe mode so I can remove/unistall spyware doctore then re-install ?

thanks again

just tried above but cannot unistall spyware doctor even when entering safe mode >F5>win7 >safe mode with networking
tried to uninstall via control panel but cannot uninstall just get"set up files are corrupted. Please obtain a new copy of the program" ....

Any ideas how to uninstall ? Do I now need to try & look doing via cmmd line ?
again help appreciated

cheers
vince
