    I am afraid reinstall is often suggested when it is not necesaary.

    I always look for other solutions first.

    Glad to see Kaktussoft does the same.

    BTW - the download I suggested is a special repair cd - it is not for reinstalling.

    bootmgr doesn't get deleted on its own!
    The only thing I can imagine is what I wrote in the first post. On my system I added a HDD with Windows Vista from a laptop computer. I did not want that HDD be wasted as only the motherboard on the laptop was dead.
    So I added it to my stationary Pc instead, booted it up (that went fine).
    Now I formated the new disk with Vista. The next time I tried to boot the PC I got the BOOTMGR error...

    I have no other idea why it happened, sorry...
