Boot to System Recovery Options . Try Safe Mode with Command Prompt. In the command prompt .... enter the command ....

start msconfig

It will open the system configuration window, with the "general" tab selected.

• Click the "startup" tab. Click "Disable all" > Apply > OK.
• Click on "services" tab. Check the "Hide all Microsoft Services"; Click "Disable all" > Apply > OK

Then try to boot again normally. Is it failing still?

If so, or if cannot do it at all, test your RAM modules for possible errors.

How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+

Run memtest for at least 8 consecutive passes.

If it start showing errors/red lines, stop testing. A single error is enough to determine that something is going bad there.

Let us know the result.

For a non-bootable system, it will be the best that you follow gregrocker. I will request him to have a look at your issue.

Working on swapping from IDE currently, on a different computer.
Downloading the files I'll be needing for all this, as well.
Is all this stuff do-able from DVDs / USB because that's all I've got right now.
Also; my tower doesn't seem to have the sticker the tutorial mentions, would the OS listed as the default for my system on the ASUS website be correct?

I'm a bit nervous to be doing all this but honestly I've nothing to lose. Thank you for your help! Hopefully it'll work or at least point me to what the actual issue is.

Downloaded EBCD and burned it in order to swap to AHCI. The computer won't boot anymore, merely starts quietly (as before), the monitor receives no signal and it just...stays like that until I turn it off.
I did notice a staggered whirring, as if a fan or something was starting up and then stopping over and over? I checked all the fans and all the visible ones were running fine.

After going though this post it comes to mind this might just be a hardware issue. Have you tested the ram? I would start out with 1 stick installed at bare minimum specs and see if it can be booted. Clear the cmos again. After that it might be (though not as likely) a low voltage issue. If you can "barrow" another Power supply from a friend or perhaps have yours tested at a local shop (many will do this at no charge but be sure to ask first).

the varying fan noise might be a dvd as well. make sure there are no disks in the drive while testing. A corrupt cmos will look to the cd for repair on many motherboard models.

Another thing to note is to look at the motherboard itself for leaking or bulging capacitors. I have had two this past month that were Asus boards with blown caps. both were less than 2 years old but out of the 1 year warranty.
