Windows 7: Today XP Died

Today XP Died

Today I finally decided that it was time for XP to go away. For some reason I have been attempting to make myself believe it was still a necessary OS, albeit it just wasn't happening. With the ability to run Vista in a VM, along with a copy of Win 7 32 bit it just didn't make a bit of sense to continue to work with XP.

Vista 32 will do just about anything that I need in legacy programs that will not run, or work properly on Win 7 64 bit. The only real application I was using which required XP or Vista 32 bit was Cool Edit Pro 2000 (which was used to record and convert all my reel to reel tapes, and records (45's and 33 1/3's to mp3, and wave format)). Now that I am finished with a project that has taken five years there is really no reason to keep XP around. Not even just to play with.

After working with Win 7 for the past year and half I find going into XP is like going from XP to Win 3.xx or 95.

So today I took all the XP VM's off of my computer. Next I bundled up all my copies of XP and shipped them off to one of my brothers. He is hard headed and still lives in a world where upgrading is considered silly, and bordering on stupid. He is of the mind that if it isn't broken. . .so what; don't do anything until it is (still love him).

So it is good buy to XP, and looking forward to Win 8. . .

My last XP machine was my Dell mini 9, came with XP Home. Stuck Win 7 RC on it and it was so much faster and nicer than XP. Ended up putting Win 7 Pro on it in August and then Ultimate soon after when I upgraded to a faster and larger 16GB SSD.

Yesterday I installed OSX Snow Leopard and it is leaps and bounds faster then XP and a tad faster than Win 7.
I am very surprised.
It was hard to get used to at first since I have only used a Mac in the past for about 15 minutes.
I may end up trading this Mini for a Toshiba netbook with a friend since he hates Windows now, he's been a Mac convert for about a year now. I'll probably never switch from Windows but knowing how to use and fix OSX will help me make some money.

I have an ATI Theatre 650 Pro TV card. It is the only hardware I own that won't work in 7.

XP partition remains.

Aside: I have been using my Vista license on another machine for a couple of months - Vista sux less than I recall.

I wish i could leave the world of XP, but my flat mates lappy will only run xp or previous and my works PC has it installed. Although, myself personally, left XP and hav'nt installed it on my big rig though i do now have XP Mode and i will probably have a right good mess around with it. At least being virtual, surely it can't do damage to my pc... Could it?

DANGER: Thread Derailment Imminent

Lee - I'd really like to hear more about this project. You just don't see references to reel-to-reel all that often. What kinds of recordings do you have?

On Topic: haven't missed XP at all (with the exception of Warlords III.)

I have an ATI TV Wonder 650 pro installed under Windows 7 and it's using the theatre drivers and working fine with Media Center.

I see you have an ATI video card, the video card drivers should automatically install the tuner drivers as well. Download the latest ATI Catalyst Drivers, choose custom install and check that "ATI Theater Driver" check box is checked.

And ATI hasn’t released a "standalone" TV Tuner driver for Win 7 (yet)

As for XP, I haven't used it since I went Vista, then 7 but I keep my XP hard drive just in case

nope, you can crash it, kill it, mess up the registry and it will not mess up any thing.

Zepher, The Mac OS is very good except in two areas:
1. Finder file manager cannot compare to Wn7's Explorer. Because of this
I use a third party application called "Pathfinder."
2. There really is not a good Office Suite for the Mac.

Cassa, no he never even served in the military. Really never had to, and the main reason is he is twelve years younger than I am. Hence, he was to young for Veit Nam, and too old for the Desert Storms I and II; lucky him.

TDI, Back in the 60's, and 70's when reel to reel was really the popular way to go must of my music was bought on reel to reel tapes. Also at the time records were the primarily way to go, so most of us who bought records used the reel to reels to record the records so they would stay in good shape. Over the years (1956 - 1989) must of my music was records that I had recorded to tape (all reel to reel because of quality). Then in the 90's I started to replace them with CD's.

Now jumping to the 2000's tapes and tape recorders are hard to find (especially reel to reel). So about five years ago I decide to convert everything over to MP3's and the Wave format. The MP3's for my iPod, and the Wave format because it would keep the quality at a high level if for some reason I needed to replace a MP3 file.
