A Rebuild Gone Bad

So I've been working on rebuilding my computer since September, I finally got it finished, worked fine yesterday. I bought a new monitor and the OS started to boot up then it froze. I restarted and nothing happened. I tried a different monitor that worked yesterday and nothing still happened.

So my dad's conclusion was that the motherboard or CPU are shot, not sure how when it worked just yesterday but I thought I would post to see if anyone has any ideas.

I'm gunna go cry in a corner now.

Thanks

If both monitors fail to work, and one of them worked fine before you tried the new one, then it might be that something is amiss with your graphics.

Have a look at that and see what happens.

Maybe something came lose inside. I would not give up and check all the wiring and seatings ( Dimms, graphics card, etc.). The mobo would only die if it got too much juice or if it was faulty from the start. The PSU is often at fault. If you have means to measure the output voltage, that would help.

Nothing will appear on screen at all, not even the bios boot.

Unfortunately I have nothing to test out the new GTX 580 I have on, so i don't kniw if that is the problem but I can feel/hear it running when the system is on.

Maybe something came lose inside. I would not give up and check all the wiring and seatings ( Dimms, graphics card, etc.). The mobo would only die if it got too much juice or if it was faulty from the start. The PSU is often at fault. If you have means to measure the output voltage, that would help.

I checked the cables, the power is fine, so it has to be something else. The mobo has been fine till now.

Is it the system in your specs?

Yes everything there should be correct for the most part.

I was hoping that was not the case, since my thoughts were that the new rig possibly needed more power than you might have in there. An 850W Corsair ought to be plenty, though. :(

Just a thought, but you didn't forget the 4-pin connector for the CPU did you?

I thought it would be enough power, it was yesterday. I'll double check but I believe everything is connected properly.

Try clearing the CMOS

I was going to give that a try but my dad is convinced that it is the mobo or CPU since the bios does run at start, so he didn't want me to. I'm gunna give it a try anyways.

He thought we might have screwed down the cpu cooler too tight but I'm not sure, all the lights on the mobo are on and such. I'd test the graphics card but I have nothing else to test it in unfortunately.

Is it possible the CPU blew out?

That is a tough call from here. It is, of course, possible - but not very likely. Only heat or too much electricity would do that. And from your data that sounds unlikely.
I am sure it is something very simple - question is what. Keep looking.

Lollies,
It sounds like the start button is activating the mobo by the lights you say are on but what do you hear from the speaker? Please note the beeps you hear on the board or not. Something is pointing me to the GPU. Please fiddle with that connection and cable, swap the cable with another. Do you have any friends whom have an old GPU that you could swap for a test?

Have you taken out your memory, unplugged anything not necessary?

Example. Take the side panel off. take out all memory but 1 stick and reseat that stick. Then unplug cd rom drives and any additional Hard drives. Basically you only want plugged in what you need. You can even unplug all audio, USB cables connected to external drives or Web cams etc. Can even unplug your keyboard and mouse.

Try that see if it boots on up. There have been many times when ive had to take out a stick of ram and reseat it boot it up with it in. Sometimes you may have a stick of ram gone bad which will prevent it from booting correctly. Your PSU may also be going out *hints* (unplugging anything not necessary)

I have had to rebuild system many times due to this type of behavior and one time it was the PSU going bad, the other 5 times it was a memory issue.

NOTE: If it boots up fine start plugging things in 1 at a time starting with your memory. Then peripherals then Extra HDD. and take note if it acts up again.

Just cleared the cmos, checked all cables, and checked the screws holding cpu cooler (Only hand tight). Still nothing, I'm hopeing it is something simple, how it could go from working fine to just having no display is beyond me. I think it might be the graphics card. It's running but maybe something blew out inside of it?

This motherboard have no onboard GPU? try my suggestion above. To me its sounds like your PSU is starting to go out. As you know your GPU is a Voltage HOG it requires the right amount of power to function correctly.

Try What i suggested and get back with an update.

Indeed when it comes to computers there isnt anything your not capable of fixing yourself, ive worked on computers for hours before i found the solution. Sometimes you must walk away and have a breather.

I had this happen to one of my machines at work the other day. I used a multi meter and found out is was the PSU.

When I did reasearch it seemed that from working to not working (not even POST) is often the PSU or the Mobo, surley if the GPU was the issue there would be some form of POST?
