Yeah I tried that. Thought it might work like Master of Orion 2 but it doesn't.

For me, re-installing it a few times helped.

So with the suggestions and the fiddling around with different options I ended up making it work for at least an hour.

Right click on your shortcut icon of the game - go to properties

Set:
  • Compatibility mode: Set as Win 98/ME
  • Disable Desktop Composition
  • Set as Admin
When starting the game go in :

  • Advanced
    • Select Disable Movie
    • Select Play in Windowed Mode
Sure it's not full screen but you can max out your window so that is fine with me.

I kept pushing on this in the settings because when I ran the game in safe mode it fully worked so I figured I would fiddle more with it.

Thanks for posting that. You not only have your own problem (at least partially) solved, this will undoubtedly help others, too. :)

Okay why not try this.

Im using Win 7 32Bit Home Premium edition. To get Monopoly Tycoon playing follow this :-

Go to the working directory,

1) Go to win explorer. Point to C:\ Program Files(x86) \Inforgrames Interactive \ Monopoly Tycoon

2) See the MC.exe file, Right click --> click on Properties.

3) Go to the program compatibility tab under properties. Click on Run mode compatibility and set it to
Windows 98 / Windows ME.

4) Remember to click on Run the program as administrator is checked also. Click Apply then click ok.

5) Now Double click the icon, DONT CLICK PLAY yet.... Click on Configure.

CONFIGURE OPTIONS

I ) Click on Direct 3D
II) Texture Bit Depth : 32 Bit
III) Texture Detail : High
IV) Device : ( Select your own graphic card )
V) Select Resolution : 1024 x 768 x 16
VI ) Sound Device : Primary Sound Driver
* Make sure you click on NO MUSIC ( Yep...I know this sucks...but At least the game works this way ! )
VII) Click Done.

Now, click on Play Monopoly Tycoon.
Have fun.

NOTE : There will be no music but at least there will be sound.

Hello there,

I have been working on what actual requirements to get this game working and I have actually got to to work in full screen and on top with sound and everything.

You will need to firstly install the game, and then you will need to install the v1.2 patch that is normally what comes with the game.

you will also need to run the game in compatibility mode for Windows 98, and then you need to have disable desktop composition, and run as admin.

Solution

Well, there is a simple solution for this.
The game works only when you tick the no music button in configuration. It's like that from Windows vista,7 ,8,8.1, and 10.
I tried everything else, like compatibility and stuff, it doesn't work. Probably will work with dual boot ( too much work) or an XP simulator.
But without music, it works perfectly.
Note that only music stops working. Not the sounds, so all the other in game sounds are active.

Sorry to necropost, but this time the issue with music is put to rest! The Windows Media Source Filter is missing on Windows Vista and later. I have documented the solution on my blog and I updated the PCGamingWiki article/page on the game too. The fix/patch I made fully restores the music properly, and I even found out what was causing the music to skip around a bit too.

It works really well, I am still so happy that I got it to work in the end! :-)
