I recently installed SW: BF2 and when I start Instant Action, it crashes to desktop with no message. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

BFR 2 did that in vista .. I tried and tried to fix it... but never found a fix.

Maybe with 7's new registry calls I can find the issue.

I reinstalled it tonight myself to test.

vista had issues with all the star wars NOTOR 1 AND 2 GAMES also.

lucas arts? I've searched their registy entries so many times to try to find fixes in vista.

can you post your error message to me when the game fails? does it fail on load? does it fail in game when you try to load a profile? etc

get back to me I will find a fix.

I have this problem too. Disable your sound device (probably Realtek) and the game will work..... but you'll have no sound :(

If you have Realtek integrated sound, then download the latest driver for your sound directly from Realteck. I had the same problem on my laptop. After installing the new driver with Windows 7 Ult 64bit, BF1 and BF2 work just fine with sound.

Try this link for the High Definition Audio Codecs (Software)
Realtek

What I had to do was go to control panel and select sounds, then right click on speakers.
Then I selected show disabled. It turned out that my realtek device was disabled. So I enabled it and all is well :D

But... no realTek

The problem then lies with what sound system you're using.

For example, I'm not running RealTek. I don't get an option to re-enable my sound devices.
When I follow the instructions as posted above, all I can do is disable my speakers, but when I re-enable them, my sound returns and BF2 crashes again.

So far, any solutions offered (but in this thread and the other similar one) have been based around playing without sound (pointless), or enabling the Realtek sound (which I don't even have).

Any other ideas, folks? (apart from getting out in the lovely sunshine and such) ;)

Thanks!

- Alastair

I stumbled across this looking for a solution to the same problem. Strangely enough once i plugged in a USB headset it stopped crashing. If i unplug the headphones it crashes. Just have to play with headphones. Hope this works for you or leads someone to a solution.

Hi Pete!

I got a solution, vvery similar to yours, but it saves you having to wear headphones.

I plugged a set of phono headphones directly into the MICROPHONE socket on the front of my PC. They just hang there, don't interfere with my sound, and I don't need to wear the phones.

Similarly to yours, if I unplug them mid-game, it crashes.

Thanks! :)

Well damn....it worked...although it didn't before so I can't explain it. We'll see if it works again the next time I play sometimes tomorrow lol

I'm glad to say that the game still works after a few days of play. Better yet, I can even play online and still amazed on how many people still play this which is great. When I had my old rig, I could only play at medium settings, with this one everything is a highest possible settings and it looks awesome.

The problem isn't the games compatibility with windows 7. It is the sound system that windows 7 uses (Realtek) that causes the game to crash. All you need do to make Battlefront 2 work are these 3 simple steps:

1. Right click on the sound icon in the bottom right corner of the screen

2. Click on recording devices.

3. Enable stereo mix

After I did this my game worked perfectly, I didn't even need to use compatibility mode!!!

I can confirm that this works for Windows 7 with out the audio driver update.

Who would think that and audio device would cause this problem and not pop up on a windows error report.

Anyway thanks Delapazz for the tip.

I just remembered how I fixed this issue: plug in a microphone. Not sure where I read that but it fixed it for me even on Windows 8! I also got the latest video and audio drivers and set compatibility to XP SP3 in the process of my troubleshooting. Hope this helps you all

Ok. I've noticed that many, many, many people have posted about the game running fine until you try to start a mission or a multiplayer game. The fix is very simple. Just plug an extra set of headphones into the mic jack of your computer or laptop and it runs fine. With sound too. Hope this helped!

Can confirm on Win 7 64bit that pluggin in my broken headphone into the mic jack worked. I have headphone in my regular headphone jack AND in my mic jack. This is a weird concept, but it worked for me. Thank you!

I signed up just to post this...
The crash problem still exists even with the GOG version
I can't believe this many years later nobody has officially fixed this bug.
I have 6 computers in a LAN and wanted to play Battlefront II offline with some friends.
I've previously purchased retail copies of Battlefront II and it always worked fine in Win XP
But now in Win7 and Win8 it crashes when someone joins a listenserver.
Pretty sad
