    My problem is not so much what is in it, it’s that it is there taking up space... and that it needs to be there or else you lose the "favourites" advantage.

    Get a larger monitor.
    It does not matter how big the monitor is, wasted space is wasted space.

    Besides I work on 1920x1080 at work and 2560x1440 at home. So its not like im using a small monitor, its that my large monitor is not as large as it should be because of wasted folder space.

    Unfortunately, it's a all or none setting to turn the navigation pane on or off.
