my documents folder redirection

not sure where this thread should belong so i will dump it here...HI ALL 1st post.

with our xp users we right click and redirect the location of their my documents folder to a network location. this can also be done by group policy that much i have figured out....but in xp there is an "easy" option when you right click the my docs folder to change the location.

in windows 7 the folder structure has changed considerably. i am unable to figure out how to do this redirection from the OS logged in as the user. i realize there is some mechanism for doing this using the Group Policy Object Editor and a folder redirection snap in. is there even a way to do this as i mentioned above? or am i stuck doing this via GP?

well happy windows7'ing - i am looking forward to the new OS and features. job security for sure

Go to your user directory, right-click on the folder you want to change > properties > location tab.

thanks that worked. however...

so i found the "my documents" folder after going to computer>organize>folder and search options>view tab and setting it to show hidden folders. then i entered in the location i wanted to redirect to, and guess what, now the my documents folder is no longer visibile.

kind of strange, but moving on. so now when i click the user's "docuemnts" icon it does redirect to the network location i have specified.

this is done as we do not want users to save any data locally.

there are two "my doccument" folders, however one is a junction that points to the real location...kinda strange i know. I personally just delete all those junctions...

The "junction" folders have an important role to play. Theye are there for backward compatibility reasons. By default in the Tools - View options, you should not even be seeing them.
To delete them, you must have altered the security level, or used a third party program.
They are only using resources when old, or non. windows 7 prorgams are being installed. No puprose is achieved in deleting them, 0r unhiding them, nor would I suggest it bis wise. The result of such deleting can lead into several phenomena. At best you may find you have duplicated files in several places on your OS. Accept the default and leave them hidden. They are in any case, of no practical use to the user under normal daily work.
