USB device causes keyboard to not respond

Hello all,
When I have a USB device, even a flash drive, plugged into one of the front ports *before* I start Windows, the keyboard becomes unresponsive while on the login screen. It stays that way for at least a minute, after which time it responds.

Does anyone else have a similar issue?
Ideas?

Either the drive or the particular usb keyboard you have is a current level grabber in that it pulls down the usb bus! I have a gaming model illuminated keyboard that has to go into a port directly for that reason and use a usb hub with a separalte ac adapter for things like flash drives to have the adequate current available.

This had been a problem with the last build and so far hasn't been checked on the new one while the same hub is also convenient as well! But the keyboard pulls too much to even use a PS/2 adapter and not light up at all. I'm stuck plugging in a second roll away type keyboard just to press F12 at post to bring the boot device menu up as well.

I've plugged different flash drives(have several, different brands) directly into the ports on the old build and they all refused to boot from when turned into a live usb stick for some reason due to this. CyberPower makes some small 4 port hubs with a blue led and amber when a device/drive is plugged in that have been found quite reliable on the other hand for solving this type of problem. Those are commonly seen in Walmarts at times or were, Radio Shack, and found for less online. But for a small hub they last! Keep the keyboard plugged in direct while plugging various brand flash drives into one of these. That so far has worked out well here with different sized as well as different brands.

I'll take this under advisement as a last resort. I was kinda hoping that it would be a software issue that I wouldn't have to purchase anything to fix...*sigh*

We'll see if the problem isn't something else!

Have you tried it out on different ports to see if it works better on one over another? The hub is always an optional item you purchase separately especially if you find your keyboard is pulling a bit or you have several devices like a printer, usb headset, web cam, and other devices.

Some hubs come without ac adapters but having one insures each device plugged has the correct amount of current needed. This is why the idea of going for a hub was suggested. It does help with some boards as well even when not having several things in use.

Urg. Well, I didn't think it'd make a difference, so I didn't try. Oddly enough, after changing the keyboard to a different port, everything seems to be running smoothly. Thanks!

P.S. Any particular reason that would happen?

I think the reason is because the service for the keyboard or USB device isn't being loaded first at start-up. Or the USB hub service isn't being started. I am not sure what the exact name it is, but the service is probably set for Automatic Delayed which means it will start when the computer is starting to idle down.

The problem often seen isn't with any service since that would stall everything tending to see problems with a usb keyboard as well like not being able to use certain keys for one example. The change of ports however seems to have helped out with Windows seeing a fresh detection of each on the other hand.

For the Logitech keyboard you have there being a gaming model backlit keyboard you still have that same slight increase in draw problem on the usb bus itself. I've noticed that only too well with the illuminated Saitek Cyborg model where that has to stay plugged into a port at all times.

The external HD, flash drives, and other usb devices are conveniently plugged into the separate hub where the power is provided externally with everything there working well since nothing else but the printer is plugged in directly at the moment.
