Since installing the RC x64 version from MS my desktop shortcut icons keep going transparent.
I've tried deleting the IconCache in app data and letting it recreate, but still they disappear.
Done several clean reinstalls and after several installation of different programs the icons go transparent again.

Hopefully someone will have had this and sorted it out.

Hello DJS,

Could you post a screenshot of this to help determine what may be happening?

Thank you,

Shawn, here's the screen shot of the problem. The image part of the desktop shortcut icons are blank.

It's happened on three clean reinstalls of the RC. build 7100. Starts ok, but after a few reboots the image has gone again.

Thanks,
David.

Hi David,

I've not come across that before. I know that you can hide the icons, but that also hides the associated text as well. Does the program activate if you click/double-click in the location of the missing icon? What happens if you try to drag one of these invisible icons to the taskbar?

I notice that you have ACDSee Pro installed. If I am correct, this is a graphics editing program. Did your problem start before or after installing this?

Hi Dwarf,
If I drag the icons to the task bar the image shows.
I've used the same version of ACDSee on all of the win7 beta versions and this is the first time that shortcut icons have behaved like this.

I don't have icons on my desktop except for the recycle bin, but I would like to get it fixed.
David.

I've just installed PowerDVD 9 and the icons are back correctly again.
After giving up trying to correct the blank icons, I carried on installing all software, PowerDVD 9 was the last software to install.

Just no nearer knowing what caused the blank icons.

Strange indeed. The only thing that I can think of is that the shortcut overlay had become corrupted somehow and has now corrected itself. Very puzzling. Have you tried removing the overlays at some point?

No the shortcut overlay wasn't touched.
The first time I installed the RC one of the first things I always do is get rid of the arrow and the 'shortcut to', but after loosing the image in the icon after tweaking, I reinstalled the OS without tweaking and still the image was lost in the icon.

I see 'scaramonger' in another thread has the same problem.

An update after using 7100 for several days.
The shortcut icon images just come and go, sometimes on boot up they are there, then disappear, or they are not there on boot, but reappear after pc has been on for a while.

Hello Studiorat,

If the shortcuts still work, then you might see if rebuilding the icon cache may help.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Try running a system integrity check, open the elevated command prompt and type sfc /scannow and if it finds any errors it will try to repair them, I'm thinking it's your imageres.dll or system32.dll that might be the cause. If that scan does not fix it then you will need to either find a suitable restore point or do a repair install. Repair Install

Umm, not very polite, not a good idea to give Brink lip there. :sarc:

it's not a matter of being stupid or posting an obvious question, it's a matter of sometimes the best of us can miss simple answers to problems. Which is why it's necessary to ask obvious questions sometimes.

And the icon cache is here:
