Incredible stuff going on folks, they managed to lower the power consumption, temps and fan noise, while still yielding a pretty darn good performance baseline (on line with GTX 470 and ~Radeon HD 5870 [in some cases]).

And all for $240.

Definitely on the bandwagon.

What are you talking about? Of course there is..... 6000 is better than 5000

Hmmm.... If the price stays under $270ish for the 6870 I may grab one. Was thinking about getting a 5870 but the price was keeping me away.

Well seeing that my 4890 is still getting the job done nicely, the 6870 is a low priority purchase for the time being.... meaning I have other stuff to get first.

But... if the price stays under 270ish, the priority could move up rather quickly (however you'll probably have yours before I purchase mine)

Well, most HD 6870's are going for $239.99 right about now.

That's significantly under $270 .

It's faster, consumes less power and produces less heat.

EDIT: Plus... DirectX11 hmmm yum yum.

I can't believe the XFX 6850 is only 199.99 That's insanely inexpensive.I paid well over that for my Evga GTX 260 Superclocked

I've always been a Nvidia Fan boy but with these kinds of prices it's kinda hard not to justify buying one or two of these if only my board supported crossfire.

Oh well I'll be doing a new build in the next 6 months so we'll see where we're at then.

so does these 6870's use 2x6 pins or no cause i recieved info you had to have dual 6 pins

If not please correct me cause i am prepared to buy a new psu on top of getting the card im thinking i will go newegg simply cause the xfx series is cheaper then in retail market by 50 bucks but i'll have to wait in see im thinking by first week in nov i will be getting my card

but it will really help if someone knew the actuall power requirments

and also i was looking at the asus card with a 50% voltage tweek i really don't know what that means im assuming it is already oc'ed anyhow i would like to know if anyone has gotten one or recieved it yet ? and how good does it feel

Article about the new naming scheme. Hopefully people with 5870s realise this and don't go out buying a 6870 to replace it.

whats funny is that you could buy a 5870 but the 6870 is just that which makes you're point justified and besides that makes the card cheaper for us then the people who paid more then a 100.00 extra on the 5800gpu but like was said in the article the 5870 is still faster

The article seems to be a whole lot of fluff over nothing, as they note...AMD can name their cards whatever they want. However potential consumers DO need to be aware that the 6870 is NOT faster than a 5870....

What they didn't take into account, or more likely did and ignored it for marketing reasons, is that the 5 in 5870 has been supplanted with a 6 as in 6870. That generation advance usually comes with a 2x leap in shader count, performance, and everything else. The 6870 is not a 2x advance over the 5870, it is actually slower.

So, instead of a 3200 shader (or the equivalent) card for the top of the 6800 line, we get a 1120 shader part. The 6700 line should be 1600 shaders (or the equivalent), and that is what we got. By all rights, Barts should be a 67xx card. That is dumb move #1.

To make matters worse, as we said before, the 6870 is SLOWER than the 5870. When was the last time you can recall a GPU coming out that was slower than it's predecessor? By a measurable margin? On the same DX level?

In the end I guess you could surmise that AMD's marketing scheme for this card is deceptive...

Bottom line with this card is its price to performance value - you get a good card with performance near a 5870/5850 for a lessor price.

That kinda sucks i was anticapating this card as a upgrade i will be able to spend a little more for a 5870 maybei should just get that one instead and just save the numbers for the name lol

Considering the price I'm still debating on whether to get one or not. It's still an upgrade over my 4890, and who knows when the better cards will be released, what the availability will be, and of course pricing??? So.....
