you should only ever install updates when there are officially posted on the Microsoft official websites only

It comes via automatic updates. I just installed it and it hasnt wrought any havoc.

It installed on my 7 Home Premium x64 PC. Haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary so far. I'm legal, didn't have to re-activate, and the genuine Microsoft software Blue box is displayed on my System screen. I just assumed it had to do with WAT or WGA. I have system restore turned on but I don't feel the need to go back to the future just yet.

Hi, this is my 1st post ,kb976902 must be dodgy because it has disappeared from the latest updates notice from MS today!! Im glad I didnt install as on another forum I read that someone installed it and cant do a system restore because all restore points are gone!!. I download and install all updates manually to be on the safe side.

KB976902 was applied on my system on 10/26/2010. I have system restore points back as far as 10/20/2010. I haven't tried to use one yet to undo KB976902 but I assume I can if I want to. Eventually Microsoft is going to have to fess up as to what this update is for.

Very interesting....the update has disappeared from the update list. People are reporting this on some forums

People that had refused to d/l it have reported it disappearing from their update lists.

I had KB976902 set as "hidden update" and when I went to restore hidden updates to see if it was still there, it had disappeared from the list.

as i say updates should only be installed when they are officially posted on the right web pages from Microsoft weather they work or not it's irrelevant there can be many reasons why an update could slip through so it's best to wait
i get to see all updates along with other mvp's long before anyone else and if it hasn't posted there must have been a valid reason and me being asleep is not one of them

Yep. I am a habitual Update procrastinator. I see the notification, I might check out what ready for download, but I never install updates right away. That's a computer chore. I do chores on Saturday!

So I saw the notification, saw one important update (the one in question). Yeah - yeah, I'll get to that....
Yesterday the notification icon disappeared. Curious, but not that.
Today I checked WU manually. The update update was gone as noted by others.

It does not instill confidence. Glad I procrastinate. Would love to know what that was all about. I.E.: "Never mind?!?"

The so called demystification (Demystifying KB976902, a.k.a. Microsoft’s “Blackhole” Update — Krebs on Security) is about as mystifying as the mystification. When sp1 is nowhere in sight, why release an update that prepares for sp1? And then withdraw it?? i would think the same they just dont make stuff for no reason also spying well if they really wanted to get you belive me you have been taken down years ago

If you are legit why worry about it only pirates worry about being found out im sure the driver is for good reason i have it and figure it is inplace of the no sp1 but to think black hole spy type is ridiculous flatout POPPYCOCK always wanted to say that lol .......

because its LAME and shows how incompetent they actually are. i'm not worried about being 'spied on' as much as I am annoyed at having them tell me i need to install something that i can't remove, but won't tell me what it is. the point seems to be moot now anyway, as it appears its been yanked for the time being...

On Tuesday Microsoft released KB 976902 to customers of Windows 7 through Windows Update. This update was pre-maturely released in English and the KB article had not been published yet. We are in the process of releasing the KB Article so users have more information about the update. This update is a Servicing Stack Update, which can’t be uninstalled. The update will be released at a later date, and it will be required to ensure compatibility with some future updates.
If you have already installed the update, there is no action required – there is no impact from the update being on your system. We apologize for any confusion this update may have caused.
Also, for extra context – Microsoft did a similar update when we were about to release the SP1 beta (what’s known as a “service stack” update – it helps the OS recognize and work better with the service pack code). As things like a service pack in development hit new milestones (i.e. we just hit RC, before that it was beta), the service stack update gets updated. That’s why folks don’t need to worry about removing it

I had inadvertently installed it on my laptop back in Oct (before it was pulled), with no apparent untoward consequences.

But it is in the list for today's important patches for my desktop (though it is UNchecked by default).
At least there is a KB article for it now.

Has anyone taken the plunge yet?

Today it came thru my official updates on my Windows7 x86, but shows unmarked, so I consider it's an optional update not realy neded. I always hide this kind of unmarked updates, to never recive notification. Hoever may be I'm rong and this kind of updates are need it.
