Hello!

Until last week my win7 worked great, then suddenly it starts to crash in applications, that use win file manager to select a file.
Example, i wanted to upload a picture to FB using mozilla firefox. When i clicked on "Browse" button, which opened the window for selecting a file from your computer, firefox crashed. Tried several times, no luck. Tried latest firefox, same no luck. Tried in google chrome, no luck. Also in internet explorer has happened the same. Googled this problem and found it might be the 64bit system causing this. So i tried using internet explorer 64bit, and it worked.
Why has suddenly this problem occur? Until last week this didn't happen, i've always used firefox, uploaded tons of pics to FB, attached it to mail etc..and it never crashed.

Today i also found out that i can't even burn cd no more, because the program for burning crashes when it opens the file manager to choose a file for burning. I've also tried several programs for burning and it always crashed.

Can someone please explain to me, why this is happening and how to repair it without installing new copy of win7 (if that would even help)?

As i type this, win update is in progress, which was turned off until now, since i hate it, cause it just fills up my disk space and gives me no noticable change in operating the system.

I found out, that it crashes immidiatelly in file manager window, when i select the "My Computer" icon. If I select any other icon (Libraries, Desktop, Recent places or Network) there's no crash.
So it must be something wrong with My Computer list, but have no clue what it might be. I have one hard disk, divided into three partitions, one dvd-rom and that's all.

Please guys, give me some ideas what might be causing this crashes.

First thing I noticed is the firefox version. 1.9.2???? Second both firefox crashes were memory exceptions.

If these were true crashes with blue screens we could use the DMP file.
If you wish to have others assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder. The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Start your own thread in the appropriate section of the forum and attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
* Briefly describe the problem history and circumstances in the same post. Somebody will attend to your query as soon as possible.

If not I would at least run a memory test on your memory.
Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot. Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots..

We could use some more information.

Ken J

Thanks for the reply Ken! As i said in first post, firefox is updated to version 3.6.12, so i really don't know what that number 1.9.2 in crash report means means.
Maybe i didn't present my problem correctly. There is no BSOD, only crash of current application, in which window's file manager is called. I'm positive it's got nothing to do with memory sticks. Again, this crash happens only when a program calls window's explorer window (example when i click "Attach a file" and then it opens the window for choosing a file). The crash doesn't happen until i press the "My Computer" icon in mentioned window, like seen on the picture below.
desktop.jpg

The picture was taken in WinXP, since i got this problem in Win7, i made a dual boot with XP, so i can work normally.

Again, this isn't just internet browsers problem, but every programs installed, which uses window's built-in file manager. I'm thinking it's more likely to be something wrong with my hard disk, maybe even cd-rom...
On the other hand, when i use windows explorer normally, not via other programs, it works flawlessly.

I hope i wrote this clearly, so everyone can understand my problem.
If anyone has any idea what might be causing this, please answer me. It's driving me nuts...

Thanks

Interesting. This is the exact same issue as I'm having right now, and this is the only mention of it on the internet I can find.

Did you ever get this problem sorted?

Seeing as it's been so long since you had your issue, I'm guessing it might be caused by application we've both installed.

Yes, i found the problem.
It was hard disks fault, because it had a lot of bad sectors. After replacement with a new one, the problem disappeared. Of course i did a new install of win7, but i'm sure the disk was causing that freezing.
My advice is to check hard disk with a disk health utilities. I used HDTune.

Ok, thanks for replying. I ended up solving this by removing everything from the startup panel in msconfig. After that the problem went away.

I thought I'd hunt down the culprit but when I enabled everything again, the problem didn't come back. I haven't hit it again since. Quite mysterious...

Did you try to check the disk for errors anyway? I'd appreciate it, if you would, because i'm eager to know if this was really the problem in my case.

I scanned the disk and it has no errors. Sounds like it might have been the fresh install of windows that fixed your issue.

I am currently experiencing the exact same issue. Basically any web browser (I have Chrome, FF and IE) will crash immediately if it initiates a Browse-to window which shows the Desktop. I have a Win7 64-bit.

The reason why I am posting on such an old thread is that despite the problem with the original user who experienced it did get resolved:

1. There is no working solution presented in this thread
2. Removing all the entries from the Startup tab in msconfig is NOT a solution but a prerequisite to further and graver problems (i.e. your Windows unable to boot)
3. Fresh-reinstall of Windows is always a solution if the cause of the problem is unknown
4. The cause of this problem is not identified.

I have initiated chkdsk and there were no errors on either my C:\ (where my desktop folder lies), nor on D:\ (my second partition).

I have managed to find the following thread which also does not provide any precise solution for the given problem:
