I'm thinking that it must be somewhere in GPEDIT.MSC, but I can't find where.

I have an external drive that is driving me crazy. It makes a sound about once every second or two. I believe it's being indexed by Windows Search, because when i stop that service... it stops.

I've right clicked on the drive and unchecked the box "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed...", but it persists.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I found it!

If you have this issue also; Open Control Panel and select "Small Icons" for your view. Open "Indexing Options" and click on "Modify".

For me, it was my F:drive that was the problem child. Even though it showed that the F:drive was unchecked, and therefore not being indexed, I noticed a little arrow to expand the category. When I did that, I found that there were still two folders within the F:drive that were still being indexed, most notably my Music folder (which is rather large). I unchecked the boxes there and all is right in the world again. Sanity restored. :)

I hope this helps someone else too.

Check the 'indexing options' control panel to see if your drive is listed in there as an indexed location, if it is, remove it from the list. It might work~
