How well does Windows 7 handle 512MB?

I just updated this old Intel Pent II 600mhz computer with a clean install of RC-7127 x86. It's slow, but works. :roflmao: That is the puter I'm posting from right now, on my network. I bought this at a thrift shop for $ 9.99 :o

Running Win 7100 without any hitch for about a month now. The only annoyance I face is that minimised Yahoo Messenger keeps popping up frequently with any apparent reason.

Try swap with faster harddrive will make a little difference.

get 7200rpm with 16-32MB cache if you can.

Doesn't x64 use more RAM than the x86 edition? I tried x64 Build 7127 with 512 MB of memory.

Got off to a rocky start; Windows warned me I was low on RAM. It even disabled the aero theme in favor of the aero basic theme. I tried opening paint and IE, however that pushed it to the limit; several errors about the inability to load more files to RAM.

But then, I had disabled any paging files before testing Windows 7 with 512 MB of RAM. Bet 99% of the time Windows 7 on 512 MB of RAM will use the paging files (virtual memory).

I'm going to test this on my gf's old Vaio with 512MB RAM next weekend. I am under the impression that Vista and Windows7 should be able to give better performance with a USB drive providing ReadyDrive/ReadyBoost.

I have a laptop running Windows 7 with 1 gb of RAM. I have the same laptop with 512 mb of RAM, so I swapped the drive over. It seems to run fine, a little slower than the one with 1 gb, but still fine. I will do further testing and report. My desktop with 1 gb runs much better, though it is newer, with a better video card.

I'm using windows 7 RC on a HP PAVILION a1120n Pentium 4 WITH 512mb and a INTEL 915v chipset ... It's too slow. Way slower than XP Home ever was. I'm switching back to XP today or tomorrow. The fan is also always running it seems. It's coming on even when I'm not doing anything. Applications and other things open up slow. IMO Windows 7 sucks for older PC's at this point, or any computer that has a chip that doesn't support WDDM/AERO.

The laptop I am running it on is only a Pentium M 1.6 with 512 mb. It seems to run OK, the one with 1 gb is still only a Pentium M 1.6, and it runs a little bit better. I don't think the graphics is good enough in either one of those to support AERO.

well, I dont have a machine that has 512Mb RAM, but I can say this, the "bare" minimum to run Windows 7, along with Vista is 512Mb RAM, but it all comes down to what specific version of the OS you are using.
I do have how ever a computer with 756Mb RAM and installed Win7 on it, and it did run slow at first, but after I changed the theme around, and tweaked startup entries, it ran pretty smooth afterwards. And I have Win7 dual booting with XP Home Edition, and after all that Win7 ran faster than my version of XP.
That test was with Win7 Ultimate RC1, dont feel like trying a lower end version.

I have a Dell Latitude D500 that I bought used and installed Win 7 7100 RC on it...but get this...it only has 256MB of RAM. None the less it runs amazing, I turned off ALL unnecessary services and the whole Windows 7 desktop back to original. At idle it uses only 4% of the total available memory and runs awesome. It can run Sims 2 with all the expansion packs on its 64MB of onboard video and still go into internet explorer. I dont understand it but it wants me to try putting vista ultimate on it and give it a try. Would be even more amazing to show what the bare minimum may be.

PC Specs:
1.3GHZ Pentium Mobile
64MB Intel Extreme Graphics 2
256MB PC2700 RAM

Anyone know why this even works????

hi! i'm a new member here.. i just want to share my experiences with vista and seven..

i installed vista ultimate on my old computer and it ran perfectly..but when i heard that windows 7 is much faster, i performed a clean install and it is running faster than vista..here is my old pc's specs:

intel pentium 4 2.4ghz
512 ram
40 gigs hard drive
128 mb geforce 4 mx 440 with agp 8x [it's very old and win7 doesn't have a driver for it so it uses the default vga driver 1024x768 resolution which is tolerable for me]
