Wondering what Processor I can upgrade to.

Hello all so I recently upgrade to a GTS 450 and now thinking of upgrading my CPU. Was wondering which i would be able to upgrade to. I currently am Running a 2.7ghz amd Athlon x2 215 and would like a Phenom II quad-core it says I can upgrade to it.

This is from HP's website on my Narra5 Motherboard:

In my opinion you will need to stay with the max rating on the mobo of 95 watt. Stay tuned as we do some more research.

You are right. The chosen CPU is a 125W deal - no good.

That Phenom II X4 925 Deneb 2.8GHz is nice if not a little pricey. Comments are very positive and runs cool for the OC potential which I'm not even sure if your bios will allow? I would say it will keep you in that box for a bit longer 1-3 years or so. In the end you will have to make this decision but you should see a handy performance gain.

The other thought would be to let the new Bulldozer get introduced and when that happens these lesser chips should become even lower priced.....my guess. This will happen soon, but I have no exact date.

Yea I messed up twice in this post haha first one I posted had a higher TDP then mine and the 2n'd one has an AMD3 slot. Trouble I'm having is finding a Phenom with a TDP of 95 that fits in a am2+ socket =(

The 920's and the 940's run on 125W. So they are out. And the triple cores have the right wattage, but they are AM3. Can't win.

I was coming up with the ADX645WFGMBOX which is the Athlon II X4 645 @ 3.10 and is 95 watt with 2mb cache but it's a AM3 as well via Tiger D. How about just max'g out your ram and then blast in a SSD for the OS and Apps only and live with it for a while longer?

I have a question I have read around on a few websites about AM3 being backward compatible with am2+ Sockets Via Bios Update since AM3 can also Run DDR2 is there any truth to this ?

AM3 CPU's will work on AM2 and AM2+ boards as long as the bios supports them. Don't forget the AM3's have both DDR2 and DDR3 memory controllers in them. It is the AM2 and AM2+ CPU's that can't run on AM3 boards due to the lack of DDR3 support.

Yeah, go SSD - unfortunately that will not help a lot for games, if that's where the OP looks for improvements. OC is another option, but that is not so easy.

See I'm a little confused now lol. So if I contacted hp and asked them if they had a Bios update for my mobo it could hold an AM3 CPU?

Yeah, I did not want to get into that one. Unless you do a very thorough research on all the elements, you are running a big risk that it might not work and your nice new CPU will becomes a decorative paper weight. But in all cases, you must stick with the 95W - unless you want to burn your board.

Ok I found 1 of 2 posts on HP support site. "I just installed a AMD Phenon II X4 925 2.8ghz cpu. It is the 95w version and the revision is C3. Thought I would pass this along to others if you are looking to upgrade." He has the same machine as me!Compaq CQ5210F processor upgrade success - HP Support Forum

You do realize that Athlon II x2 215 you already have in there is an AM3 CPU.

I caution you from ordering any new CPU's till you call HP. As you had posted the mobo spec's show clearly that it's a AM2+. I would confirm that the AM3 chips with a 95 watt or less rating will work, you may also want to call AMD. I've called them several times and the support department at AMD is tops!

Yes before I do drop money I want to make sure thats why I came to you guys. Especially since my knowledge of hardware is still Novice =D. But, Thanks to you and every one who helped me out it means a lot. I am going to be sending an Email to HP and I will also see what AMD has to say.
