Windows Live - Deleted emails disappear

I recently migrated to Windows Live 2011....IMAP with Hostgator webmail. Two bugs persist...

1. When I delete emails in WL, they disappear. (When I delete them through webmail, OTOH, they properly go to the server Trash folder and that properly synchs with WL Trash.) I've seen many threads with this issue, but most folks seem to fix the issue by clicking "Show All Messages" under View/Filter Messages. This didn't do it for me. Incidentally, I've checked the Trash/Deleted Items folders in Storage folders and the deleted emails aren't there. I can't find them via a search of all mail either.

2. When I send something in WL, the sent item gets stored in a Sent folder in the Storage Folders. When I send through webmail and then synch with WL, the sent item shows up in the proper IMAP Sent folder (under my main inbox), which is how I want it. Not sure where to start with this one.

I suspect one or both might have to do with improper labeling and/or organizing of folders....this migration comes after a nasty Outlook crash and then an attempt to try Thunderbird, so there's been a lot of messing around with the server folders.

Thanks in advance.

When you use their webmail service they are assuming you want to use their server folders since they are unaware you sometimes use WLM. When you use WLM it similarly assumes you want to use WLM folders (in your PC's WLM Program). WLM allows you to view the IMAP folders on the webmail service. It doesn't actually "sync". In WLM "sync" (in reference to mail, not contacts or calendar) means "send and receive". For IMAP accounts a copy of sent mail is only kept in the Storage Folder group, while received mail remains on their server until you "delete" and "purge" it.

Okay, thank you....so sent mail is working properly. Any thoughts on finding deleted mail?

For IMAP accounts, if you delete and purge the messages via WLM, you are telling the server to delete them for good. If you delete a message from any of the WLM storage folders it should go into the deleted items folder under the storage folders. But if you empty that deleted items folder it's gone for good.

To be clear, I'm not intentionally purging....I just hit delete from, say, the Inbox and they disappear. Is there some setting where delete = purge?

Thanks again.

Generally speaking "delete" for an IMAP account means "mark for deletion". But I can't say what your mailserver will actually do with it. If the mail you're looking for is not visible via the webmail interface in any of the server folders, it's probably gone. Keep in mind that if you access the same server with a pop3 account on any computer, the first pop3 computer to download it will also delete and purge it from the server (unless you have the pop3 account set to "leave mail on server").

Had the same problem using WLM on Windows 10. Worked fine for months since installing Windows 10 then suddenly nothing in my "Deleted" folder. After trying different things I noticed that in WLM the deleted folder was named "Deleted" but when checking the properties of the account under Accounts, Properties, IMAP tab, it had the deleted items path as "Deleted Folder". I renamed it to "Deleted" and now items I delete appear in this folder. Not sure what caused this suddenly but I also notice I now have 2 junk mail folders, Junk & Junk E-Mail. Items appear in both from time to time.
