I am trying to install windows as a clean install, in that I want to format the hard drive fully during installation, rather than trying to upgrade from inside the OS. I currently have windows vista installed on the machine.

I insert the disc, restart the computer, it boots the disc, I get to the menu, choose install, and instead of going to upgrade or custom, it says it cant find some drivers. It doesn't specify which ones. I am using an OEM version of windows 7, so I can't upgrade only clean install.

My current theory is that it wants a full set of motherboard drivers for my motherboard. However, I have been unable to locate them anywhere on the web.

I would appreciate either a link to a website, or if this is not likely the problem either a piece of advice or a point to the correct article on the forum to read. I will be searching the forum as well in hopes of finding an answer.

Thank you in advance! If you need any more info to help, just ask.

bios: use AHCI not RAID

I have the same motherboard. 7 installer said it wanted CD/DVD driver. Solution is in BIOS. Change SATA from RAID to AHCI or IDE (AHCI recommended). I was able to install 7 32bit after that, but now that I'm up and running, I'm still looking for these drivers:

MASS STORAGE CONTROLLER
PCI SIMPLE COMMUNICATIONS CONTROLLER.

You only have one disk... so you don't need RAID. You would have to load that to at the beginning of install to get it to work, but you don't care. Use AHCI.

The other thing I did... which I don't think affected the outcome... was: I disconnected the IDE CD/DVD ROM devices, and I'm using a SATA DVD rom for the install. I really don't think this was the problem. Let me know if you find the drivers above. terren272

1) enable AHCI in Windows.

2) enable AHCI in BIOS.

3) download & install your drivers from here:

win updates for driver / pci simple comm still missing

Thanks Theog, but I already enabled AHCI in BIOS, and I checked regedit... it's already on = 0. There are no 7 drivers at the gateway site. 11 motherboard drivers for VISTA though.... are you saying they will work on 7 ?

I got the storage controller driver from window updates, just kept doing updates. The only thing I don't have a driver for is PCI SIMPLE COMMUNICATIONS CONTROLLER. Everything I care about works, so I'm going to let that one go. Let me know if anyone finds that driver.

TRICK to windows updates working on this pc: detatch card readers and CD/DVDs from mainboard, and only connect ONE new device at a time (while pc is off). Let it install the new device and then turn pc off to connect the next. It gets stuck if you have more than one CD/DVD drive or other device connected, so use 1 DVD drive and add the second at the very END.

Download the MODEM drivers.
