Why can't I unassociate a file type?

Hi all,

I accidentally associated .mpp with the wrong program. After some searching, I found (allegedly) that if I open an elevated command prompt (yes, I made sure to open as administrator) and type

assoc .mpp=

this should solve my problem. It does not. I have tried the command with a space between the p and the = and without. I have also tried it with ASSOC (all caps). It doesn't work.

I don't care to download unassoc.zip or any other questionable zip or exe to my computer. Anyone have any other ideas? As luck would have it, I don't currently have the program that it *should* be associated with on my computer, so reassociating it with the proper program is not an option.

Since you dont have Microsoft Project you cant open them anyway. If you still want to assoc. it to something else go to control panel>assoc>find mpp> assoc to something you do have (maybe notepad)

How to unassociate a file in win7

I figured it out for windows 7. the steps are as follows:
1. Open an elevated command prompt.
2. type assoc .ext= none .ext needs to be replaced with the file you want to unassociate.
3. press enter, this should do it, hope it works
