Any way to keep GRUB boot loader from over taking windows?

Hello! I was wondering if there is any way to keep GRUB boot loader from over taking windows boot loader. Now I know about using the windows CD after install. But, I have a pre-installed version of windows and last time I wanted to take Ubuntu off I had to use recovery discs to restore the boot-loader. Is there any way to keep windows boot loader after installing ubuntu with out having a windows install disc ?

Install Ubuntu using Wubi and you won't have issues with the boot loader. It will continue to use the Windows bootloader.

See the thing I don't like about wubi is its 30gig set limit is there any way of getting more hard drive space using it ? That's initially why I want to do a real install of Ubuntu. I mean its no big deal to use recovery discs to remove Ubuntu and its Grub boot loader. I was just simply asking if there is a way to recover the boot loader with out having a Windows 7 Install CD for those people with Pre-Installed Windows.

You can use a program like EasyBCD (Download EasyBCD 2.0.2 - NeoSmart Technologies) to go ahead and remove the Grub Bootloader and restore the Vista/7 Bootloader.

So do I just install Linux onto a partion start up windows through GRUB and then start BCD Inside windows and tell it to restore windows Loader?

Usually, I will have either a free partition already set or a free hard drive to install Ubuntu on then I will let Ubuntu handle it as Windows does not natively know how to format a partition for Ubuntu.

Creating a free partition can be done using Gpart from the live cd - but it's arguably easier to create empty/unallocated space for a new partition using Windows Disk Management that Ubuntu can then find and format for it's own ext4 file-system during installation.

with my linux distros i use when i install them (i use separate hard drives not partition) i unplug all my drives except the drive i want the distro on. boot the live cd, install the distro, shut down pc, re-connect the drives and on boot up in bios go to the selection of drives to boot from.

there is a program for linux that you can install to manage your boot up StartUp Manager
