Windows 7 SP1 RTM Can Break Some Programs

While installing Service Pack 1 RTM on top of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 should be a walk in the park for the vast majority of users, there will also be those that are bound to come across some issues.

According to Microsoft, the deployment of SP1 RTM can negatively impact a select list of programs if they’re already installed in Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

The Redmond company has published KB2492938 detailing the problems that customers can come across.

The software giant provided examples of programs that will not run after installing Service Pack 1 RTM, including IncrediMail Xe 2.0 from IncrediMail Ltd., Lenovo System Update from Lenovo, and Ninja Trader 7.0; 6.5 from Ninja Trader.

Unfotunately that's the nature of updates - sometimes programs get broken. I'm sure this is something Microsoft tried to avoid but with all the PC configurations out there with their various software packages some are bound to get broke

Hopefully it won't be too bad and Microsoft will have/issue quick fixes/workarounds.

I quite like incredimail personally , I think garbage isn't a well thought out description :sarc:

the version which SP1 will break is XE and is from 2007-2009

Incredimail has left a long lasting very bad taste for any PC imo.
Which is why I did say, imo on my previous post.

It used to be the leading cause of problems/malware issues on all PC's it was installed on.

It was then considered garbage, and I am sure that anyone who remembers, still does.

I don't use any of the specified programs, but I suspect that like roaches, if you see one, there is at least a hundred more in the woodwork.

I do not see any issue with the MSE failure........

It very, extremely, simply means that if you are running an old version of MSE, you need to update it.

That is not an issue.

My guess is the MSE failure was due to a very old revision of the software. I've installed SP1 on two systems so far running MSE and neither had an issue.

If you do not have version 1.0.1963.0 or later installed, upgrade using the instructions in KB2254596 , or launch Microsoft Update and install the update or a newer version from there.

When the SP1 went on here the configure WMP 12 screen came up when first going to play some multimedia showing the service pack contained an update for that. WMP was broke but simply needed to be reset again.

As for MS SE the SP likely contains a few updates that are effective if the latest version is on since those are newer then what was seen when that first came out.

Likewise for other 3rd party wares seeing any problems you would want to first remove the present until the SP is on successfully to see if that same version of a program can be reinstalled and run without glitches afterwards. If not newer version required time.

With any service pack or large number of updates you may end up seeing problems with certain select programs. As far as email clients I've looked over Incredimail without any malwares seen as well as TBird when first looking for a Windows Mail/Outlook Express replacement and then went with Live Mail. No problems since the SP1 install and glad I stayed with MS on that.

That's damn true, as long as you stick with some the good & updated MS softwares, you'll not get in trouble with SP1...

I updated to MSE v2.0 after SP1 install, because the day before SP1 went in WU, i got rid of McAfee (looks i was right to do so!)
Cleaned install windows 7 Pro a week before SP1 aswell and choose Windows Live Mail 2011.

You got "rid of" McAfee! :roflmao: That's the best news I've heard today! Good move on your part for sure!

Hopefully all goes well for you with the V2.0 version. But you will find that you made the best possible move simply getting away from the other.

The Live Mail was installed directly here for importing mail from multiple accounts and has been running seemlessly for a matter months now. I did subsequently remove the Live Mesh option however afer giving that a look.

So far since last wednesday however everything seems to running as it had prior to seeing SP1 installed. No complaints with any "achy breakys" to pass along for the time being.

Typically it's those odd or offbeat 3rd party programs where developers don't work along with MS that end up seeing most of the problems once something like a service pack goes on. A look at the MS page mentioned in the article there however so far is labeled a fast "Rush List" only identifying just those few which is good news for most.
