I turned off the recently opened programs and start menu items, and it took my start menu email shortcut with it.

So I rechecked those two boxes, but the email link is just GONE.

I can't even find it in the "Set Programs" option from internet options default programs.

And just for clarity, there used to be an easily accessible box you checked to make live mail/hotmail your default email program.
I'm not concerned with the difference between the two, as I can't find an option for either one at this point.
And either one would suffice in giving me direct access to email without having to type it into the url each time, or even using a favorite shortcut for that matter.

Have you looked in C:\Program Files (X86)\Windows Live\Mail ?

Assuming that it is there, you can then pin it either to the taskbar or the start menu by dragging it to whichever you'd rather pin it to.

this seems promising, but I don't have that specific folder. I do have a windows mail folder though, but I'm not sure what I should be trying to drag into my start menu.

Windows Mail is a red herring, it is a non functioning folder. You don't have a Windows Live Mail folder? Ok stupid question time, is there any way you accidentally uninstalled WLM?

I went ahead and dragged all 9 items into my start menu, and none of them make windows live mail open up when clicked.

no, all I did was uncheck the two boxes I mentioned in the first post. I was looking for a way to turn off the history in notepad. this of course deletes everything from the startup area, including the live mail.

so unless the windows updates that I did at the same time have deleted this for some reason, I did nothing to make it go away.

Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail are completely unrelated.

Did you check Program Files (X86) rather than Program Files? Windows Mail is in the 64 bit folder, Windows Live Mail is in the 32 bit (86) folder.

I actually checked all 3 program folders in there.
Program Files
Program Files (x86)
ProgramData

And there's no Windows Live Mail folder to be found.

Go to the url you want (mail.live.com) or (windowslive.com) and drag it from the address bar to your start menu where you will be given the option to "pin it".
