If Windows 8 goes primarily "cloud" who will be on board?

I for one will never allow my personal info or programs to rely solely on an available internet connection.

Not me.

But I could not believe that MS would be so shortsighted as to make it an "only" situation. It seems a more likely scenario that the cloud will be an available feature for those who can and want to use it, but your "standalone" system would continue to be available "Legacy" style.

Did you read this somewhere or are you just speculating?

Bandwidth is expensive, slow or plain unavailable in a lot of countries and who wants the OS hogging it? As for data privacy, the corporates would be most worried, individuals already have a lot of important stuff stashed away in their email accounts/drives, picasa, facebook etc.

Net only Operating Systems will never work. Humans are just too paranoid as a whole to allow a corporation to store their data for them. Not to mention Internet Connections are metered in many parts of the world, slow, potentially unreliable, and that's just a few problems. Internet OSes only work under the following conditions:
  • Unmetered
  • Fast (over 100mbps each direction)
  • Reliable
But most importantly, suppose the central server goes offline. Have fun using your "computer" oh wait that's right YOU CAN'T.

A cloud only OS would not be that popular as to users concerns over privacy and security, I would try it but as for banking data etc I would be doubtful.

The advantages of a cloud based environment is that;
1). Data is not stored locally. So, if laptop is lost or stolen, personal information doesn't get lost since it was never on the device
2). People want their data everywhere they are. They want it on their computers, tablets, phones, etc. Having it in the cloud facilitates this.

A great many people will be attracted to both of these reasons. If you don't believe that, look at the number of people who switched from using mail clients like Outlook and Thunderbird and instead went to something like Gmail.

No working unless online? Doesn't seem right to me. As an option, sure, but as the main method, hard to picture. A Guy

These days, the Internet connection that I have at my house is like any other utility. I expect that it will be there and be up and running...just like the electricity, gas and water. I honestly have experienced very few Internet outages in the past few years....in fact....I'd almost say that I have had more power outages than Internet outages.

And in the event that my home internet connection is down, I "could" if necessary tether my laptop to my cellular phone and access the Internet that way. So there are at least options. Another option might be to move my laptop to a free wi-fi hotspot and access my data from there. While not the most convenient....more than possible. I cannot remember the last time I was able to pick up my TV and haul it into McDonalds to watch a movie when my power was out.

This isn't just Redmond though. It's not just a matter of "Microsoft" is going to force me into this. This is coming from other directions as well. For example, Google Apps. There is also a webtop OS coming from Google before too long and the laptop boots pretty much right to the web. Look at the interest in Tablet computers. Most of these don't store data files and such locally...instead they are stored and available via the cloud.

As much as I have been apprehensive about the cloud, looking at a variety of things shows that I am slowly moving that way. What have I done specifically, well I use gmail for email. I use tools like Facebook and Photobucket to share photos with friends and family. I use Evernote (Remember Everything | Evernote Corporation) to store notes that I can access from any device, anywhere. I track web site logins, passwords, and other things that I know I may need access to when I am not directly on my home network.

in 1980 the oil company i worked for in saudi arabia had a large mainframe based ibm system with remote terminals, the data was stored centrally and everyone could log on to a terminal at whatever office had one and get their data and run their programs. we had a large central IT dept. that was expensive, secretive, slow to respond to users and no control.

when the pc came out right about then (s100 buss home-brews to start), and lotus/symphony, along with microsoft's basic and fortran, we had local data and backup systems, locally developed 'programmes' (spreadsheets, etc.) and with ms word, a text processor, and with local printers, we no longer depended on the remote connection to a group of IBM 'suits' with blue ties at the main office. with a pc modem (i had a 300 baud high speed ;)) we could even call up and exchange stuff on dialup bulletin boards worldwide. or even connect to the ibm mainframe and run a terminal emulator.

the IT suits hated it, resisted it, and their loss of central control and made the lives of those who embraced the new technology difficult, but as i proved, a program we developed in our section in symphony to provide monthly project reports for our engineering teams cost us well less than a tenth of the cost to produce, was tailored to the project manager's requirements, and could be run whenever the project manager wanted. even had graphics and pie charts. the mainframe version was cumbersome, did not produce reports directly, data entry was touchy - and had to be adjusted manually to fix errors from the projects which could cause the program generating the reports to fail, this took over three days by my staff, then it was run in a batch job queue along with the other jobs, such as the monthly accounts, which had priority. it eventually produced 13 shopping carts of printouts that had to be collected from the main office, broken up into sets and delivered to the appropriate project teams. each team got 7 copies, because each team ALWAYS had gotten 7 copies, they never asked the teams how many they needed. the project managers hated it, but the central computer people couldn't bother to actually find out what the end users really needed, they gave them what they thought was best for them.

when i took over the it section in engineering i initially went around asking how many copies each project team actually needed and cut down the number such that only 4 carts were needed. we then developed the symphony spreadsheet that would replace the cumbersome MarkIV system, by actually consulting the project managers and seeing how they worked and what data and formats they needed for their monthly reports, which after we finished they could run at their whim. they loved it.

the mainframe types vowed revenge, and swore they'd go back to a centrally managed system with remote users dependent on using their otherwise dumb terminals that ran programs virtually on the central office mainframe and stored all the data there, so they did not have to leave their air-conditioned offices, did not need to deal with end users, and could go back to developing applications with large teams of programmers and expensive budgets, charging the end users for the time they spend using the one-size-fits-all solution that the central computer dept dictates.

we are almost back to that with this 'cloud' baloney.

iwe are almost back to that with this 'cloud' baloney.
But we are getting back to that old model for very different reasons. Today, we have more devices than ever before and all of these devices have the ability to access and view that data. We have workers spread all over the globe, all with need to instant access from whatever device they have available...be it a cell phone, tablet, etc. This really isn't a push to centralize and control the data, but rather a need to not be isolated to only accessing that data when we are on 1 computer in 1 location.

In the mainframe day, it was centralized because that was the most effective use of the computer power we had at the time. Then, we moved to a time when personal computers became a maintstay and it was much more effective to have that data local to the computer to best utilize the computing power they offered. And today, we are moving away (somewhat) from these powerful desktop computers, and instead moving to smart phones, tablets, netbooks and the like that don't offer the full power of a desktop computer, but rather convenience rules the roost.

I don't see anybody just moving "everything" to the cloud instantly. But it's slowly moving there and has been for a few years now.

The other advantage to apps and such on the cloud is the ease of keeping everything updated and on the latest versions. This gets the newest features out to every use in a very timely manner...unlike the current day implementation where people buy a version of a package (say office 2003) and simply stay on it for 5-10 years..potentially without running any security updates for known problems.

Just like any new technology their are advantages and disadvantages. So my take is we'll just have to wait and see how it works and how it's presented.
Then their is a cost involved as well to have all your data and OS stored somewhere else so like I said we'll just have to wait and see.
