I can't seem to get an Action Center warning to leave my system tray/notifications:
http://i55.tinypic.com/2eg5vs9.png

I've looked all over, and nobody seems to suggest anything other than to change Action Center settings to disable the warning. That, however, doesn't work. Some of the options are greyed-out:

Is there any way to make this go away that I'm not seeing? Maybe a registry hack?

The question you should be asking is why have you turned off the Windows Security Center service? Is that also perhaps not the reason why some of the options in the Action Center are greyed out?

Looks like the security center service is turned off. To start with, click on Start orb, type services.msc, locate the service called Security center. Double click it, then start the service and set its startup type to automatic.

If the service refuses to start and gives an error message, run a scan with the resident AV as well as freeware Malwarebytes antimalware, then try again.

What AV are you using? Sometimes security suites disable the security center.

Thats what happens when you blindly disable services without knowing what they are for. Anyways, has the problem been resolved by re-enabling the Security Center service?

Wait wait wait, it wasn't fixed. This is only fixed while the service is on. I wanted it gone while the service is off. I have no need for the service, and I wasn't blindly disabling services. I know what they do and what I need. I'm not exactly amateur just because I made one amateur mistake, give me a little credit :P

What I meant was did the Action Center message go away when you re-enabled the Security Center service? (Why would you want that disabled anyway, seeing as it plays an important role in system stability?)

Open the registry editor and navigate to the following key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wscsvc

Double-click on “Start” in the right pane and change the value to “4″. Reboot.

In that case, no, it didn't go away despite unchecking the boxes while it was on. And just for performance, really. I've been running without it on for quite a long time with no issues other than the annoying icon in the tray.

Well if you're sure AC settings are still greyed after enabling SC service (did you reboot?), you may need to run sfc scan couple of times. Then see if the AC options are available again.

Also since you seem to have tinkered with the OS, its difficult to say from a distance what else you might have enabled/disabled.

They don't stay greyed out with SC on. I successfully unchecked the settings after turning the SC service on, and then turned it back off to see if I'd still get the Action Center system tray notification (which I do). The Action Center message is complaining that the SC service is OFF to begin with. I just wanted it to not state the obvious to me (that the SC service is disabled). Most registry settings changed on my PC are from TuneUp Utilities

The fact that some Action Center options are disabled when the Security Center service is turned off should have been your first indication that the service should not be turned off.

But I've been researching what you're trying to do: turning off critical Action Center messages such as the one you're experiencing when you turn off the security center service. And I've come to the conclusion that it cannot be done, as doing so would defeat the entire purpose of said messages.

If it was so easy to turn off such a critical message, what would stop a virus or some other form of malware from disabling various critical system services and then also stopping Action Center from warning of this?

My advice to you would be to reenable whatever "non-essential services" you turned off, and leave them be - they are there for a reason.

And as much as I hate doing it, the only way that I can forsee to return your system back to normal would be to format and reinstall (and I despise recommending a reinstall), because as Bill2 rightly pointed out to you, you have tinkered with the system in ways that we cannot possibly predict, and therefore cannot rightly provide any kind of meaningfull assistance that would require you to turn them back on again, which you obviously have no intention of doing.

Best to not turn off Action Center notifcations. Instead, open Action Center and tell the ones you've taken note of not to warn you for that issue any longer.

The kind of tweaking you did of Services is not tolerated well by Win7. This is not XP or Vista, but a perfectly balanced OS which is as lean as can be and which will almost always come back to bite you when you tweak beyond normal system settings.

You may want to start fresh to get a purrfect reinstall of Win7.

Thanks for all the help.

Not sure why you guys are recommending a format or a new install... or implying I've hurt the OS. It runs like butter, I couldn't be happier. Just wanted that message to go away. Turning the SC service back on would solve that, but not the way I was looking for. I can live with it though.

To acheive what you want:
right click on the bottom bar,
choose properties
in the taskbar tab click on the Customisation button
brings up the select notifications,
just under the inner box click on the link "Turn system icons on or off"
set action center to off.

And that's it, no more stupid notifications to enable the security center.

Surprised the "experts" didn't know, then again they also fail to understand one of the most basic concepts in tuning computers is to disable unwanted baggage - in particular the idiot proofing.

Turning off Action Center Notifications is not a good idea. Not only will you not be notified if your AV or Firewall are turned off accidentally or due to infection, but Solutions sent to Problems (reported or not) will not be notified.

Again, the best way to avoid nuisance notifications is to open the Action Center and tell it not to warn you again about that particular issue.

This is a new, perfectly balanced OS which doesn't need any of the old XPired tweaks and methods.

Just a thought! If you turn off your security and then turn off the little security notice that appears you will be back asking for help with virus, malware, spyware, rootkits .

Well dunno, I've been using internet connected computers since 1985 on the old 640k IBM PC disabling all the baggage that started appearing around W2k (WFP), XP's protection, and Win 7 (skipped Vista), and never yet had an infection. Yes I do use a firewall - currently Commodo (antivirus on demand scanning only).

Turning off Action Center Notifications is not a good idea. Not only will you not be notified if your AV or Firewall are turned off accidentally or due to infection, but Solutions sent to Problems (reported or not) will not be notified.

One earlier answer was along the lines: 'if they made it easy for the users to disable or/and hide action center, it would be easy for an infection to do so as well.'
Well guess what: it is easy for a user to both diasble and/or hide action center, it only takes a few clicks, not registry hacking or dll patching - it's built in, all it needs is knowing where to look.

So being so simple to diasble/hide, 'not hiding it' it will provide barely little extra safety from a determined well constructed attack.
In short: Please don't oversell the capabilities.

This is a new, perfectly balanced OS which doesn't need any of the old XPired tweaks and methods.

They've been telling us with every OS; you gain no mileage from quoting the sales literature.

OK, for the average user I never suggest they disable/tweak these or similar artifacts: apart from being unlikely to notice any gain they can indeed more easily get themselves into trouble and furthermore possibly invalidate any maintenance/warranties contracts in place. But for the power user, there are indeed real benefits to be made.

Same as motor cars, been around a lot longer than ms windows yes still today 'racers' are tweaking their rides - also against the advice of the manufacturer, dealers and most general motor mechanics. But they do get results, just like power users tweaking their 'puters. Most people (including myself) don't modify our cars, but some do.

Don't simply say it's wrong: It's a personal choice.

I may be on the wrong tack (I am sure I am, because what I think is the answer is too elementary!)
Open the notification area by clicking the snmall white arrow. Select "Customize"
Select "Action Centre"
Select "Hide icom and notifications"

Action nag can be removed completely, permanently and safely.

This post may trigger "warnings" spam from "experts", believe me these "experts" haven't tested this therefore their warnings are pure speculation(they are afraid of any non-ms approved modifications) just ignore them and enjoy nag free windows 7.
It's tragic what passes for "expert" these days.

-----=====THE SOLUTION=====-----

Get "Take Ownership" from here - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1911-take-ownership-shortcut.html

right click and take ownership of c:\windows\system32\ActionCenter.DLL and c:\windows\system32\ActionCenterCPL.DLL

rename those files .bak and reboot.
