Transferring Pics, Vids & Music to Second Hard Drive

Recently I noticed that my 500GB hard drive was beginning to get full. It has everything on it. I installed a second hard drive, 1TB, and my intention was to keep all of the programs and OS on the primary 500GB hard drive and transfer all of my documents (pics, vids, docs & music) to the 1TB drive.

When I go to C:\Users\MyName and I go to "cut" a folder like MyMusic and then "paste" it in my new E: drive, it says that the folder is shared and if I move it others will not be able to use it.

Now, before I do this, with MyMusic, MyPictures, etc. I have a question: By moving these over to the E: drive (the new 1TB) drive, am I going to do something I regret, like losing access to these files, the OS not being able to find them, or something like that?

If folders are shared in your documents directory you could just copy the contents rather than cutting. Then once copied delete the duplicates leaving the shared folders.

You can change the default location of your user folder using Brink's excellent tutorial.

Either that or Nitroman84's advice ...

I don't want to leave the shared folders on C because then I will always be transferring files over to E. I guess what I want to know is that, if I transfer the files over to E, will my "Libraries" be able to find them?

Answer No. But all you need do is to relink the folders on the E drive. Personally I would give your new external hard drive a dedicated letter, say "X" so that it doesn't get tangled if you add a couple of flash cards or a card reader!

Is there a quick lesson on how to assign a dedicated letter?

Go to Disk Management.

Right click a drive.

You will see a choice to "change drive letter and path".
