How to Enable or Disable Internet Explorer 9 Ability to Pin Sites​

   Information

Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) included a new feature to allow you to pin websites from within IE9 to the taskbar or Start Menu in Windows 7, and only in the Start Menu in Vista.

This will show you how to enable or disable Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) to be able to pin websites in Windows 7 and Vista for all users.

You must be logged in as an administrator to be able to do this.

   Note

If Disabled:
If the abilitty to pin sites is disabled in IE9, then it will remove the Add site to Start menu option when you click on the gear (tools) icon and File in IE9. You will also no longer be able to pin the website directly to the taskbar when you drag the website's favicon from the IE9 address bar to the taskbar and drop it. Instead it will only pin it in the jump list of the pinned Internet Explorer icon on the taskbar now when you drag the website's favicon from the IE9 address bar to the taskbar and drop it.

You will still be able to create website shortcuts and pin them to the Start Menu and/or taskbar using other methods, such as below:

EXAMPLE: IE9 Pin Websites Enabled and Disabled

OPTION ONE

Using a REG File Download

1. To Enable IE9 Ability to Pin Sites
NOTE: This is the default setting.
A) Click on the Download button below to download the file below.
Enable_IE9_Ability_to_Pin_Sites.reg


Download


B) Go to step 3.
2. To Disable IE9 Ability to Pin Sites
A) Click on the Download button below to download the file below.
Disable_IE9_Ability_to_Pin_Sites.reg


Download


3. Click on Save, and save the .reg file to the desktop.

4. Right click on the downloaded .reg file and click on Merge.

5. Click on Run, Yes, Yes, and OK when prompted.

6. If open, close and reopen IE9, or restart the computer to apply.

7. When done, you can delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

OPTION TWO

Through the Local Group Policy Editor

1. Open the all users, specific users or groups, or all users except administrators Local Group Policy Editor for how you want this policy applied.

2. In the left pane, click on to expand User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, and Internet Explorer. (see screenshot below)

3. In the right pane, double click on Turn off ability to pin sites. (see screenshot above)

4. To Enable IE9 Ability to Pin Sites
A) Select (dot) either Not Configured or Disabled. (see screenshot below step 6)
NOTE: Not Configured is the default setting.

B) Go to step 6.
5. To Disable IE9 Ability to Pin Sites
A) Select (dot) Enabled. (see screenshot below step 6)
6. Click on OK. (see screenshot below)

7. Close the Local Group Policy Editor window.

8. If open, close and reopen IE9, or restart the computer to apply.

As default it was disabled for me and I try "Enable_IE9_Ability_to_Pin_Sites.reg" file but it not work. Still it disabled. It appear but not active;

Can be a mistake on reg file?

After merging the "Enable_IE9_Ability_to_Pin_Sites.reg" file, did you close and reopen all instances if IE9?

If you did, then restart the computer to see if it may not be grayed out afterwards.

Yes I did. But still same. I could'n figure out what is wrong
But I check Regedit after merge your .reg file but HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main key have no value. Maybe this can be clue for you

Use the Find and Find Next option in regedit to search for the DWORD DisableAddSiteMode in case it may have been entered in another location in your registry from some other method used than the one in this tutorial. Delete any DWORD DisableAddSiteMode value it finds.

I search it for whole computer but no resulsts. And I try manually add enableaddsitemode for both location (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main) but not worked:

Lıke I said at first It's not important just curiosity. I'm trying all your tuttorial for knowledge. Maybe this happens because of something I changed before.

The correct DWORD is DisableAddSiteMode. Having the value of 1 would disable, and having the value 0 or deleting DisableAddSiteMode would enable.

It seems like you may have some other issue than what the tutorial sets since you do not have the DWORD DisableAddSiteMode in your registry.

I'll keep hunting to see if I may be able to find what else may be causing this for you, and will post back if I find anything.

Hi there, for me it was already "On" set by default...

One thing strange is that when i pin a site in the Start Menu while i'm logging in with my Username/password, and when i do open a new separate IE9 windows from the same site, it appears i'm not logged in on the new open window...!?!

Is that normal?

It may be a cookie issue, or some issue with that site. I just pinned this page to the Start Menu and opened different new windows to the site as a test, and I was still logged in. Does it do this with other sites as well?

Hi there, thanks for your respond...

I still got that issue with sevenforums as today. I'll check later with another site when i'll logged in.

PS: I actually use IE9 x32bits. When i open a new IE9 x64bits windows or x32bits it is still the same, not logged-in in the separate open window.

It does not do it when i open a new tab...only in a separate window!

EDIT:
When i do click in a tutorial link as exemple, it does open a new window and i'm still logged in.

But when i do open a separate IE9 blank page and go in "Favorites" openning a SevenForums link, i'm not logged in!

Well, i can't really tell as i did it through your link and explained post above the behavior in the "edit:"

It does the same in another site when i'm logged in.

So, to clear my situation:

1) I open a window for a site and i'm logged in, I do open New Tab (same site) i'm still logged on...

2) I'm logged-in in the same site, i click a link inside the same web site, then a new separate window open, i'm still logged on.

3) I'm logged-in in a site (SevenForums for exemple) but if i do open a separate window (blank page) then go in Favorites openning the same site, i'm not logged on.

It's no big matter, i'm only curious if it's a normal behavior!!

It's no big deal but wanted to be sure.
I was thinking afterward it was made for security purposes, but looks like not!
