Hi,

I have had no trouble in the past setting up permissions on a NTFS formatted USB drive using XP. I am able to set everyone to have only read access and myself to have full rights.

the process is as follows:

remove all from the list exept everyone.
add myself as a user with full control.
go to advanced options for everyone and disable write access, and enable read access.
deny takes over allow, so thats all good.
eject USB everyones happy .

in Windows 7 this is not the case, after formatting the USB to NTFS and going to permissions, that is where the problems start.


at first the only group that has permissions as default is everyone, if i change any of these permissions i get access denied even though I am the owner because i formatted the drive.

So i ignore and continue to add myself as full control. i get access denied! I then move on to making it so that everyone has read access but no write access. again access denied!

what is the same process ins XP is not the same in 7, why?

It seems every time I make an amend to a permission in 7 is says access denied even though i am the admin and the owner. Tried thsi also on the hiden admin acount and I still have the same problem.

My guess is in window s7 everyone actually means everyone, including admin and myself, so even though adding myself as an additional user it still wont allow, unlike XP where adding a user seems to overwrite everyone.

I hope I have made sense, and someone can help me.

Everyone includes EVERYONE. The same as it has been for eons. The NTFS permission system has not changed from Windows XP to Windows 7. It is exactly the same. What is also the same is DENY permissions take precedence over allow. That means if you give EVERYONE a DENY permissions it will DENY EVERYONE. Regardless if you put ALLOW under a specific user/group. This is the same as it was in Windows XP, unchanged.

Hmm ok, within XP, adding in everyone with special deny permissions and then adding a specific user with full access worked ok. But not for windows 7.

How would I go about setting it up then? With XP I was able to set permissions so that anyone other than myself who were on my server or not couldn't delete files. It would say access denied.

I tested this on various computers at home, at work in a cafe etc. and it was fine. I cannot seem to replicate the same on windows 7.

That could not work...the LEAST access always wins, XP, 7, whatever. If you deny access to Everyone, you can't give it back per user. The deny will take precedence. Try it on an XP machine and see.

I have tried on XP and it worked, :/ I was allowed to delete and add files myself but everyone else could only read the files and not add or delete.

How would I go about doing it "the correct way" then? so that I have full access but no one else does? This needs to be work off the server too.

even though i am owner i cant edit NTFS permissions on USB Drive.
