Personally I see little reason to bicker about this. Microsoft likely won't change their mind otherwise IE9 may have supported XP.

My personal opinion on this is;

I do not believe its to get everyone to upgrade to make them more money, they have plenty of that. I personally feel they are choosing to stop supporting older OS's so people will stop using the same OS for many years!

I still have 3-4 friends that refuse to upgrade to 7 even though they have computers that can't even be utilized fully by XP.

Does everyone really expect older Operating Systems' to be supported forever? Even with newer software revisions/versions that are released by Microsoft? Seriously.

As to the argument 'Vista and 7 are almost the same so there is no reason they should not be able to let IE10 run on Vista'. Yeah, you THINK it is almost the same. Only Microsoft knows what was the true differences between the two. You don't know every difference no matter how much you may think you do, get over it.

My thoughts are scattered, but still valid.

On my system (Core 2 Duo T9300, 4 GB RAM) Vista was faster, more secure and just as stable (both never really had stability problems) as XP. And after SP2, there is no question that Vista is vastly superior to XP.

Hold on, a program not working on vista? That's not unexpected-- Oh, wait, intentionally? Hm. I think it's fairly obvious that MS wants people on 7 quickly, although it irks me that they'd go to this length to do it.

I love 7! I had XP Pro since it was RTM and of course got to know it very well. I was leary about going to Windows 7 due to imagined compatibility issues. My fears were unfounded, my old Epson scanner and HP printer work fine in 7. Only one bit of old software won't run on my 7, but that is due to my using X64. The software works fine in the X86 version.

I have had a similar experience. Vista was a decent and reliable OS, well at least for me. I had a much better user experience with Vista than XP. I'm always puzzled how the OS got such a bad rep.

no need to use Internet Explorer...

the crap is not the Windows... but the Internet Explorer... It's just a crap web browser that is Microsoft want it to gain market share... They pushed out market share because it's bundled inside Windows... what is good inside IE9? just hardware acceleration? Firefox also done it and other browser seems good without hardware acceleration. slowest web rendering and super minimalistic customization, still wanna use IE9? I just update it and remove it, this is year is the 4th year I never use Internet Explorer.

using another best alternative web browser like Firefox / Opera / Chrome / Maxthon or else may gave you a big difference... IE can't be operated in portable mode while others can...

One more thing, XP users always got the latest version of alternative web browser like Firefox 4, Opera 11 and Chrome 12. But there's no Internet Explorer 9 for XP users. Microsoft market share will be down for sure. Other web browser are available in Linux platform while Internet Explorer absolutely won't.

sorry if my English is bad.

That is not enirely true! even open source browsers will drop xp support, just like they did with windows 98, NT, ME( Mistake Edition). So far most opensource browsers droped support for win 2000, and the next logical step is Xp. Dont think microsoft cant influence open source, it can by dropping support for a OS and making it eos/eol.

Most all of the Computers at our scchool still use XP, we got new ones in our Engineering class from Dell which had i7 CPUs, 8gbs of RAM, Nvidia GTX 450s, and windows 7 Ultimate, but what does the IT guy do, install windows xp, because the underlying servers on our school network uses Windows Server 2000, which is quite disapointing because Dell is sponsored to give out computers to schools here in CA. I know all of these things because I am a student lab technican.

I liked it.

I liked Vista also; maybe because I never had a problem with it. I had a few softwares that wouldn't work under Vista but that was not due to Vista but to the companies refusal to update their drivers. I am sure most of those who complained about Vista had their reasons but I did talk to a few folks who when asked why they disliked Vista could not come up with an answer specific to their situation. They were more Microsoft bashers than anything else.

I still have Vista Ultimate x64 on my backup pc and the disc itself is safely tucked away for future usage.

BTW, when I purchased Vista Ultimate from Microsoft's online webshop I did it at the time when they were offering Win7 free to those purchasing Vista. Two for one. Not bad.

I've found 90% of Vista opinion to be uninformed, 5% to be informed, and 5% perhaps, actually educated, informed and desployed with reason.

From a technical standpoint, I know there are many of you here, that are with me, when I say, or rather think to myself, when hearing Vista comments, just how sad and uneducated the general public is in terms of technology.

People literally praise 7 and 'blast' Vista on particular points, where underneath the skin the parts are the same. It's an almost neverending source of amusement for me. I should say though much of that good 5% has been observed here.

Hi all
Updates and "newer" stuff doesn't always mean better.

For example things like NERO are so full of bloat and un-needed features that 90% of the people who used to use this as "The standard" DVD / CD burning application have switched to alternatives -- often cheaper too.

Take also Office 2010 -- now if you used EXCEL 2007 (or 2003 -- probably IMO the BEST version of this product) you used to be able to set a very useful "tagging" feature which would allow you to dynamically retrieve Stock prices etc etc.

This has been dropped in 2010 -- you can if you are an expert in VBA get similar functionality but most users of this type of stuff AREN'T PROGAMMING GURU'S.

For example Download and Keep Track of Stocks in Excel 2007 - How-To Geek

But those getting 2010 won't get this stuff so easily. It can still be done but it's NOT simple so a typical office user would not normally be able to do it unlike 2007 and 2003 versions.

I am these days very suspicious before upgrading ANYTHING - especially software and always run stuff on Virtual machines to check them out.

I remember a ditty about GM (General Motors) back in the 1970's - It was said if you kept a car longer than 6 months you'd get a warning red light on the dashboard with a caption saying "You're Cheating" and after a further 3 months components would break down according to a well designed "Planned Obsolescence" algorithm.

I'm not ANTI progress -- but just look at the perfectly serviceable hardware being junked just because W7 for example doesn't have proper drivers etc etc.

I just think we should be really suspicious of "upgrade for Upgrades sake"

Many people will still be perfectly happy running XP for the next 20 years if they can --and why shouln't they if thats all their application requirements demand.

Now newer technology such as 3-d, holographic imaging, video / audio streaming / authoring etc DOES require newer OS'es and hardware so I'm not at all against new development -- but we should keep this stuff in check and remember that many many users won't EVER need this stuff.

Cheers
jimbo
