Cannot scan wirelessly with Epson NX625 ... At my wits end.

I am close to giving up, this is really frustrating. I have been searching the forums and the net in general to help me, but nothing worked. I have uninstalled and re-installed 3 times now.

My computer info:

Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit

I recently bought a new Epson Stylus NX625. Installation was pretty painless, it connected to my network easily, and the printer works just fine. It's a wireless-multifunction printer/scanner/copier. It prints wirelessly, not sure why it's having such an issue SCANNING wirelessly.

Epson Stylus NX625 All-in-One Printer - Product Information - Epson America, Inc.

I updated all the drivers/firmware/software from Epson's site ... so everything should be current. I didn't use the CD. I have the latest version of Epson scan, 3.77.

The problem is, Epson scan does not seem to want to work. There is -NO- way for me to scan anything; I tried Windows Fax and Scan - it does not detect my network printer, I tried adding a network printer, it does not show up in the list. There is not even an option to scan files to a SD card or anything, even though the NX625 has an SD card reader.

I tried manually adding the .inf files to windows "add hardware" wizard, nothing. The epson drivers are TWAIN and I think Windows wants WIA to be able to use Fax & Scan.

The problem is when I open EPSON scan, the program itself works fine, until I try to scan or even preview. It acts and shows a dialog box showing that it's ready to scan, but suddenly freezes and has to be manually closed. This happens every time, and I haven't found a way to fix it. The program just hangs. It hangs on the "scanner warming up" dialog, and the printer display reads "Scanning ... " but nothing happens. It just stays like that. Eventually, after around 5 minutes, an error box will come up saying "Error sending data", and the display on the unit will read "Communications Error".

I also tried scanning right from the control panel, but that doesn't work either. On the display, it says "Communications Error. Make sure the computer is connected, and then try again."

... uh, I don't use a USB cable, I have a laptop, that's why I want to scan wirelessly.

Does anyone have any solutions at all? I really like the NX625, and I don't want to return it ... anyone have any similar issues? i've done everything I could think of.

I also emailed epson, not sure how much help they will be, though.

Hi,

Firstly, thanks for such a detailed report, it makes things much easier :)

Secondly, and this may be the silly bit, I need to ask 1 main question...Have you installed the 64Bit drivers for the Printer/Scanner?

You may want to try using the Advanced Boot Options and selecting Disable Driver Signature Enforcement and see if it allows the program to run.

Most Wireless printers need to have the USB cable plugged in at some time during installation in order to set the host machine (your laptop) with the correct Wireless settings. In your case you have Wireless printing which would suggest that at least half of the setup was successful.

Hi, thank you for responding.

Yes, I have installed the Windows 64-bit drivers. I do not have a USB cable, so I wouldn't be able to test it with one ... i'll pick one up and see if that solves the issue.

In the meantime, I will try your suggestion with the Advanced Boot Options and selecting Disable Driver Signature Enforcement.

I'll reply back with my results. Thanks =D

Ok, so I restarted, and chose selecting Disable Driver Signature Enforcement.

... nothing, program still hangs, NX625 still says "scanning ... " until EPSON scan tells me it failed to send data. I really don't know what the issue is ... i've had multifunction devices before, Canon and Lexmark, they never gave me these issues.

If I have to use a USB cable every time I want to scan, that is going to be ridiculously inconvenient since I have a laptop ....

Maybe try running the System File Checker to make sure you dont have a corrupted file.

To do this, click on the Start orb and type cmd.exe in the Start Search box. Rightclick on it and choose "Run as Administrator". Once the Command Prompt opens, type
"sfc /scannow" without the quotes and hit Enter. The System File Checker will start. It might take a while to complete so be patient. Reboot when it has completed.

If this didnt help and no problems were found, try creating a new User Account with Admin permissions. Logon to it and try scanning an image now.

Hi, thank you for your suggestion. SFC didn't find any errors, and the same thing still happens when creating a new User account with admin privileges.

Would I have to get a USB cable to get my scanner to work? that seems to be the only option ... since it's not in communication with my scanner, and Epson Event Manager says that my network connection to the scanner is ok.

... So. Not sure why it's having a problem then. The Epson Event Manager Network Scan settings lists no errors.

The Scanner Network connection test says "Available".

Hi, sorry for the late reply...

If you have the availability of a USB cable you may want to try scanning with it plugged in, then trying wirelessly. It could be that 1 of the settings has changed and connection VIA USB may resolve any address issues.

If it can print wirelessly, why is it telling me there is a "communications error" when I try to scan wirelessly?[/QUOTE]

Although these things are called "multifunction" devices, they are actually quite separate devices in the same box.

Printing is primarily an output function. Your machine sends whatever you are printing to the printer, and only receives acknowledgements.

Scanning is primarily an input function. Your machine sends various commands to the scanner, and should then receive the scanned material. Obviously this is not working for you.

Considering what you have already tried without success, I would suspect you have a defect in the SCANNER connections to the wireless transmitter, ( which is doubtless common to all the devices in the box). Could be something as simple as a loose cable.

If the machine works when you use a USB cable, then that is certainly the problem. If it does not work with a USB cable either, then the scanner has some other defect.

Can you exchange the machine? That is what I would try at this stage.

... I cannot exchange the machine, I bought it on amazon. Epson's "support" does not even have a US toll-free number ... when I called, it was in california.

I've configured the networking settings and everything is fine. If I get a USB cable and it scans, that's great, but really annoying since I have a laptop and will have to connect the USB cord every time I want to scan. Sigh.

If it works with a USB cable, that is proof that the wireless scanning does not function. That is sufficient grounds for a warranty claim on the seller. If it does not work with a USB cable, the same applies.

They would have to repair it, exchange it, or refund your money. Which Amazon did you buy it from? ( Country) And when did you buy it?

Hi, I just ordered a USB cable, i'll see if it works when it gets here.

I ordered it from Amazon.com, US, and it was new in the package, new and never opened.

If I do not know what model year the unit would be, I assume it's around 2010 so I don't know if has a warranty or if it's still covered by one. It didn't state anything about a warranty in the paperwork.

Here? ;

Seems you have to buy warranty;

that would be illegal where I live. A minimum warranty of three years is given on such articles.

Sorry that doesn't seem to be much help.
