Whenever I am away from the system for some time, the icons and text doubles in size and I am unable to read the text without scrolling back and forth. Why does this happen and how can I correct it?

It never happens when you are there? Only when you leave the system alone for some time?

That is correct.

Normally, Windows can not change display sizes without a specific command to do so, which also involves selecting the sizes desired.

What programs do you leave running when you leave the system?

I frequently have Word, Quicken, Windows Live Mail, and MSW Calendar running. Sometimes also Excel and MSW Data Base. Does this help?

Sorry to be facetious Strathmore. This sounds very strange. Have you never seen it happening when you are just sat there? If not try sitting there and not touching anything for a few minutes.:)

Change the screensaver and see if it still happens. Some switch resolution and fail to switch back.

Not really. Do you use a screensaver?

you don't happen to take your glasses off (or put them on) when you leave your pc?

(second lot of apologies for possible facetiousness - and a second helping of 'welcome to sevenforums' too! :D)

and a second dollop of welcome and good idea, pillboxhunter. ;)

Yes, I use photos from my personal album.

Force the screensaver to start, and see if it changes your resolution;

Code:
%systemroot%\system32\Bubbles.scr /s
Substitute the name of your screensaver for "Bubbles.scr"

Searching for .scr will find the screensavers.

Some third party screensavers use other methods to start and run the screensaver.

You can also get to it using a right-click on the desktop, and choosing "Personalization";
