I have a few 1080 mkv files that have subtitles. VLC can shut them off easily, but I can't figure out how to shut them off in media center or media player. Does anyone know how to do this? Or is there a way to edit the MKV and remove the subtitles permanently?

Depends. Are the subtitles hard coded into the movie? If yes, it'll take some work. If theres a separate subtitles file (like .srt or .sub) then just delete that file from the folder (or right click in the movie window, select Subtitles and then "Off/none").

If the subs are indeed hard coded, in the menu bar select Play, hover your cursor over Filter, then DirectVobSub (autoloading version), and select "Hide Subtitles". You'll need to do this every time you play .mkv videos with subtitles.

You can also remove subs with mkvtoolnix.

if you are wanting to play a film with WMC then put the srt file in a folder that will stop it showing , better still if you dont want the subtitles then delete the srt file

I had this issue. If you're using shark007 you can change it.

Do not completely disable subtitles but in the config panel there is subtitle settings, click it depending on whatever setting your using and go into the subtitle panel. You can uncheck subtitles but that will screw it up, go inside and individually uncheck each type "bluray, mkv, etc."

Hope it makes sense. It's difficult for me to explain because I'm not home right now.

Thanks for the help, auero's advice was the closest to a fix. It's not as easy as clicking on the video screen in media player or center. Some of the files I have acquired are >10GB and did come with the separate subtitle files but even getting rid of them didn't fix the problem. When I play the mkv the haali splitter appears in the tray, and I can just shut them off there by right clicking there.

So I reinstalled the latest version of shark 007 and reset everything to shark recommended, because I don't have a great understanding of all the things you can adjust there. Now some of the files load without the subtitles some still require right clicking on the haali icon. And also some files get two FFD icons and a haali icon in the tray.

Ideally I'd like to have the subtitles off for the files that have 2 and even 3 different languages, but be able to know how to turn them back on because I do watch foreign movies from time to time.

In the upper right of the Config TAB are controls to enable or disable subtitles.
When making a selection on the H264 TAB, the correct (corresponding) subtitle display option ia auto selected.

To permanently get rid of subtitle streams in .mkv get this:

MKVtoolnix 4.7.0 - VideoHelp.com Downloads

use MkvMergeGui. Load the .mkv file in and uncheck all the subtitle streams. Save the remuxed .mkv to another folder or drive. They are good tools to have as some players get confused if you have more than one audio track etc..

The MKV toolnix is outstanding! You can take the 10-15GB file with multiple AC3, DTS, and subtitles, and just pick what you want and re-save, shaving off a GB or 4 at the same time!

I like miles too.
If you don't like it just look out the window.

With MkvToolnix and tsMuxerGui you can do quite a lot without encoding the video. Great for set top boxes.
