Today i got a new reuter free from british telecom i renewed my contract for broadband and got a replacement reuter as the network kept dropping out on the laptops and printer,so nice little looking reuter the last one was big and ugly

Oh look it's a homehub 3. Don't suppose you've tried a ShieldsUp on it have you? I would be interested to see whether ports 161 and 4567 are open on all of them, or just mine. I'm currently in the middle of a bit of a battle with BT trying to get them to explain why these ports can't be closed on my router.

ShieldsUp is basically a port scan, it detects holes in the firewall. Even the default Windows Firewall manages to stealth all ports, and every router I have ever tested has always passed with flying colours, except the HH3: https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

The issue for me specifiically, is port 161. It's used by SNMP and could, within theory at least be used to hijack the router. GRC | Port Authority, for Internet Port 161   BT seem to have a few official lines on this port being open, either it's used for updates, or "to speed up gaming". Personally, I'm more inclined towards the former, as I can't see any reason why it would speed up gaming.

The problem is though, it seems to be accepting any connections, from anywhere. I had a friend, who is on TalkTalk try to connect to my IP on 161 using his web browser, and it accepted the connection and just sat there "waiting" presumably waiting for instructions. I don't like to think what could happen if a SNMP agent was used instead.

Im having this discussion in two threads, so it's getting a little confusing, so I'll just stick it all here.

I sent BT an email basically asking them to explain themselves, and got a level 1 tech support guy phone me back, to try and close the open ports down. He went through all the usual crap, deleted all my port forwarding rules, and surprise surprise, the port was still open. At that point he put me on hold, and then came back and said "We have just done a port scan on your computer, and the only ports we are detecting open are ports 80 and 88, which are used by your web browser".

See now I have 2 issues with this,

1) Isn't he supposed to tell me before he initiates a scan? Isn't that technically an attack, even if it's benign?
2) Well funny how port 161 and 4567 is showing open by several port scanners then isn't it, (I verified my findings by using Nortons scanner too) as well as the router actively accepting connections on 161.

When I pointed number 2 out to him, he then told me that "the port needs to be open so it doesn't interfere with online games." So, not only has he lied to me about the port being closed, he has also lied to me about the reason it's open. If you want a port opened for games on the HomeHub you do it the same way you do with any other router, you set up port forwarding.

I want to know what BT are monitoring on that port, it cannot be good, and there is no way to close it as far as I can see. Time to get my letter writing hat on I think.

Oh by the way boo, if you do a "User Specified Custom Port Probe" on 4567 you'll probably find that one is open too.

I've always had a stealth reading since using the HomeHub 2, plus it gives the high security level which my other router didn't, that would only do WEP.

I've always been connected via Ethernet as the router is in the same room as me but at one point my husband connected via wireless from the room next door and he said he had connection drops but since he got his new machine with Windows 7 64 bit we drilled a hole in the wall between us and I connected him via Ethernet and he's had no more problems.

I had the same issue and it happened because someone else Installed a New Homehub 2.0 witch had the same Channel (Freq) As ours so Wireless kept Dropping out

We changed it to Channel 11 and works fine

it seems as if you can't trust anyone these days - they all seem to be spying on you one way or the other. i do wonder what info they may be harvesting on you, and who are bt sharing it with, or selling it to? i have also been starting to wonder about my android phone recently - i know the os is open-source and all that, but the google apps certainly aren't...

oh for a simple paranoia-free life, though i suppose that would get boring pretty quickly...:huh:

i've got a pretty old bt business router, with pretty buggy firmware - luckily the important (to me) things work ok - naturally it passes the shieldsup test completely - i wonder how long it will be until they send me a leaky 'replacement'?

What game developer in their right mind would make a game listen on the SNMP port, when there is such a big chance of conflicts on any of the main system ports?

Today I was given a new kitten! It seems that it was abandoned by its mother before it was weaned. He is so small that I have to feed him with an eye dropper every 4 hours..
