XFX Radeon HD 6970

hello all

i have a XFX Radeon HD 6970. Which has worked fine until a changed my PSU.

- Buzzing and consistent tapping/Ticking (more of a whine) from the Graphics Card Fan (fan is clear of all wires). when fan is at 24%. Up to 30-40% the tapping cannot be heard but the buzzing is more noticable. the card is 1 and a half months old.

Your new PSU (if it's the one listed in your specs) has 75 amps on the (single) +12 volt rail. While I haven't heard anything about them, from what little I caught on google doesn't suggest it's crap... so you should not be having any power related issues.

Do you still have your old PSU? What make and model was it? Why did you decide it was time for a new one?

If the old psu doesn't exhibit the same behavior, then you might want to rma the new one?

How did you arrive at the conclusion that the psu was what prevents you from playing the witcher?

A quick google search suggests you're not alone and that overheating is shutting off a lot of systems.

The Zalman ZM series are fairly decent psus. Operating at 50C should not knock them out.

Are you using the latest drivers and have you patched the game?

First off you should understand that this is not due to a problem with Gigabyte Motherboards or the BIOS. Other manufacturers boards also have the same problems.

It is due to the Memory Controller on the AM3 CPU's which, by design, are set for 1333 Mhz memory modules or slower. That doesn't mean that you can't run 1600 Mhz RAM or, even if you do, that you are entering the realms of overclocking (although it can seem like it) but, it does mean that you need to understand the inherent problems of running your RAM above 1333 Mhz. on these Processors.

i concluded i should upgrade the psu because the psu wouldnt let me switch it back on after it shutdown (i didnt know then what i know now). regardless, i changed the PSU and now it doesnt shutdown. yeah, im using all latest drivers and game patches.

PS, I was running at 1600mhz before and after. i have changed it to 1333 mhz

Perhaps the problem with the Zalman was just that you didn't split the +12 volt rails right? If you use +12 # 1, 2, or 3, each providing 20 amps, then you'd be fine, but using 5 or 6 might not provide adequate amperage... thus, the shutdown? The page you linked doesn't say what the max amps are for lines 5 and 6.
