Yes, and to confirm (if you can) attach a real keyboard and see if the problem continues. It sounds like you may have simply gotten a bad unit, though - it happens.

It is going back for a replacement. BUT, I have had the same problem with typing skipping to other places on the page on my 3+ yr.old computer with Windows 7,upgraded from XP. I sure would like to know what causes it as well as a fix. Never had that problem with XP.

Are you per chance hitting the Touchpad while typing? That can cause problems like this, especially if Tap-to-click is active.

Connect a mouse, disable the Touch pad and see what happens.

Good point Britton. The odds of two computers owned by the same person doing the same goofy thing with two different keyboards with out a added program is slim to none. I wonder if their is some kind of Office or Word program installed on both computers that could be causing this to happen.
To the OP, let us know on that program idea. Also did you install such program on both machines about the same time. My thinking is they both might be infected with the same thing. Like a virus or malware.

Wife has the same problem with the typing. On the old machine, the problem went away on its own after a short time. Problem has not gone away on the new one. BUT, people seem to indicate that it could be the touchpad. I can not find where to disable the touchpad in the Contor Panel. Which item might it be under? It is not under "Mouse" and nowhere do I see a heading of "Touchpad"

Actually, we do not use the touchpad at all and use a wireless mouse.

Wife has the same problem with the typing skipping. The problem resolved itself on the old computer twice but came back each time. New computer still has the problem. We have always used a wireless mouse on both. I can not find any topic in the control panel to turn off the touchpad. There is a topic, "Mouse" but it is not there. Any idea which heading the touchpad might be under???

You may be able to disable the Touchpad in BIOS Setup. The Users Guide for the laptops should tell you how (if it can be done). If you don't have it you can get it from the manufacturers support web site.

If you open the Touchpad settings (right click on it Touchpad icon in Taskbar), look for one called Tap to click and uncheck it. That may resolve the problem.

I don't have an icon for that in the taskbar unless it is one that is hidden and it will not open from the taskbar for me. But I will check my other computer (older one) to see if I can do that on it. Anxious to send this one back!!

When I don't see an icon for the touchpad on a laptop it usually means the full driver has not been installed. Go to the Dell web site (Welcome to Home User Support) and find the driver download area for your laptop, try downloading and installing the touchpad driver.

You should then see an icon in the taskbar and be able to disable Tap to click.

I was able to get the touchpad in the taskbar by having the items in the taskbar only combine when the taskbar is full. After I got it there, I right-clicked on it which opened the window with options. But there is no option there to disable Tap to Click. Must be something with Windows 7 or Dell??

It is going back. I am understanding that it is the touchpad which is super sensative that i scausing the problem as more and more have had the same problem. On the 2004 Dell Inspiration, the touchpad is in the taskbar, and I can open it. It says at the window to click the touchpad in the window to change the settings, but when I click on it, the window disappears.
On the 2011 Dell Inspiration, the touchpad icon is NOT on the taskbar but when located in the control panel, there is no way that I can figure out how to change the settings other than deleting it which I would not want to do.

As I mentioned before. Download and install the Touchpad driver from the Dell web site and you will then have the icon in the Taskbar and be able to change the Touchpad settings and even disable it.

Just had a thought. You should be able to disable the Touchpad in Device Manage / Mosue.
