Western Digital 2 TB Caviar Black SATA 6GB/s Internal OEM Drive WD2002FAEX

Just built this machine. Installed Windows 7 on the 500GB drive. Both drives are plugged into the blue SATA 6GB ports on my board. My drivers for these controllers are Marvell 91xx SATA 6G v1.2.0.1002 (Dated 3/7/2011).

The second 2TB drive shows up in BIOS as well as Drive Management in Windows, but it will not be recognized as an accessible drive that can be formatted, partitioned, or anything. I get an error each time I attempt to format or partition through Drive Management.

When I plug the 2TB drive into one of the other (black, Intel) SATA ports, the drive works fine, but in the blue ports it just won’t seem to work. The 500GB drive, however, works perfectly as the boot disk in these ports.

I would be fantastic if I could actually make use of the 6GB SATA ports, it’s part of the reason I purchased this board and these drives together. So far Intel tech support has no answers. Does anyone know what might be going on here? Please help!

Thanks.

Did you just purchase the drive? Do you have other SATA ports to test it in (friends, etc?)

Theog, I'm not at home at the moment, but will post a screenshot as soon as I can.

LiquidSnak, all the components listed above are brand new. The drive definitely works in the other SATA ports. It just will not work in either blue 6GB SATA port. These ports do work for the 500GB hard drive that has my OS, however, so the problem is isolated to the 2TB drive in the blue 6GB SATA ports.

Welcome to Seven forums Scoy. You have the same model number listed for both drives so I can't check the specs for the 2T drive.
It may be one SATA 6 header is bad, check that the other is operable by pluging in the 500GB drive and see if it works. Swap your data and power cable too.

Marvill don't work any better on a Asus P6X58D-E either. Intel is some what ashamed that they didn't do their job on sata III and went to marvill. Many have posted that they have better speeds using sata II which are Intel. I think Intel will get their xhit together and give us a download for the sata III soon. That would make me happy. Who was the one that said you get what you pay for. Their should of been a big (P/S) if you wait long enough.

From what you've said, you have tried the 2TB drive in both ports, and the 500GB drive in both ports that are 6gbps. If that is the case, it sounds like there might be a problem with the drive. Try and get it RMA'd for a replacement, Western Digital is pretty good about that kind of thing.

My mistake. The model # on the 2TB drive is WD2002FAEX.

The port works when I plug the 500GB in it, also when I swap cables.

When I plug the 2TB drive into one of the other (Intel) ports, it seems to work fine (is recognized, can be formatted, accessed, etc). Do you think there could be something wrong with the drive keeping it from only functioning on a 6GB port? If I can't find a solution this week, I will replace it and see what happens. I am also waiting on Intel Tech support to "recreate" my situation and get back to me.

Looks like you will need to put the 2TB drive in an enclsure and try to run WD LifeGuard tests to see if it is a bad one. From all indications its not working at all. I saw several negative reviews, along with good.

What do you mean by enclosure? I have sever other machines with Sata II ports I could use. Could I run LifeGuard on the drive with one of those?

Are you using the Marvell drivers and AHCI? If so you should try using the vanilla Windows AHCI driver. I use those rather than the Marvell myself.

Is your BIOS up-to-date? Any Marvell BIOS update will probably be bundled in the Motherboard BIOS update. Make sure you want to do this though, as you usually can;t flash your BIOS back to a previous version. See if there are BIOS release notes of changes that may address this issue - or wait for Intel support.

something like one Of These. Yes you should be able to run the DOS version perhaps on anither PC.

Looks like you will need to put the 2TB drive in an enclsure and try to run WD LifeGuard tests to see if it is a bad one. From all indications its not working at all. I saw several negative reviews, along with good.

Here are the results of a Quick Test.

Test Option: QUICK TEST
Model Number: WDC WD2002FAEX-007BA0
Unit Serial Number: WD-WMAY01524304
Firmware Number: 05.01D05
Capacity: 2000.40 GB
SMART Status: PASS
Test Result: PASS
Test Time: 22:14:17, June 08, 2011

I will run an extended test over night, but I have a feeling the results will be the same. I don't think anything is wrong with the drive itself.

I am currently using the Marvell drivers and AHCI, but I began by using the vanilla Windows AHCI driver, which gave the same results.

BIOS are flashed and up-to-date.
