I have a hp mini netbook.
And it runs windows 7 starter.
Im trying to put ubuntu on it also, as a dual boot.
I managed to shrink my drive, and i think it partitioned it, but its not 'allocated' as anything, i tried to namne it etc, but i got a warning that all other drives would be unbootable if i proceeded.
( i know i should also have made a back up recovery disc b4 shrinking the drive.. BUT have you ever tried to make a bootable recovery file for a netbook when u havnt got a usb dvd drive? forget it. I have a usb hdd, but couldnt seem to make a recovery file without the neet to use a dvd drive to make it bootable. oh well, its done now, and luckily everything seems ok, tho if u can give me the info on how to do this in future, it would be usefull. thanks)

So.. how do i get that unallocated hard disk space ready for my ubuntu experiment?
And how do i make it so ubuntu doesnt screw with my windows 7 boot up, but gives me a dual boot?
Thanks

Sometimes patience is a virtue. Since you wiped the recovery partition that option is gone, can you get or do you have an install disc?

What exactly have you done?

We have a thorough list of tutorials that would have helped you do that the right way.

im lucky, i managed to get it booting up again

basically i have the hp recovery manager built in, as it was a hp computer, supplied with windows 7

and sorry, but i cant get thru guides very well.
in fact, it was guides that got me into the mess anyway
the problem with guides is, they often dont work the same way as the computer reacts..
then ure stuffed.

the guides i like are the definitive ones.
any others just serve as a hinderance.
Take the ubuntu guide on installing a linux os over a woindow7 os

'select the automatic dual boot'
there is no option to do that
howver many times i try.
this is my point
forget guides..
unless they are difinitive.

so i tried to install ubuntu on the 100gb unallocated space
cant do it
dunno how to activate the unallocated space
stuck
annoyed
tired of computers in general
im no tech head & dont want to be
can this be sorted out simply??
or do i just do a complete sytem resore with my hp recovery, and newver damn well touch it again?

Well that's a start, if I was going to experiment I would use option one of this tutorial http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/116098-dual-boot-windows-7-ubuntu.html

That way you don't have to mess with the boot manager, you just install it inside windows.

but my hard drive i managed to split
the 100gb free space is unallocated
how to i actually render it usefull?
thanks

see..
step ONE
of that guide, i cant even do
it says to select a drive
im supposed to install it on the hard drive i want to install my ubuntu on?
or wat??
wat a joke

my 100free space is unallocated, as i said
so its not even allowing me to use it
grrrrrrrrrrrrr

because a netbook is slow
ubuntu is faster os than windows 7

so i want a dual booting netbook
one for speed
other for all the software that only windows runs

by the way.. i didnt REALISE it would be torture til after i tried it of course.

and now ive shrunk my windows 7, for no reason..
probly made th ewhole shystem less stable than it was b4
all for nothing
so how do i delete that uneccesary unallocated hdd space i made?

thanks very much for trying to help

i'll wait til people make this stuff easier to do
til then, im not gonan bother.
i suspect windows 7 will make things easier..
and ubuntu will do it about 10 years after

ubuntu is a great, smooth os.. but its kind of rubbish too
not enuff software support..
and often has problems installing drivers etc..
it kind of runs more like a beta if u ask me

It's still going to be a netbook no matter what you put on it, just leave it alone and come back when you are fresh and we'll help you out.

it doesn't help if edit your post, I am waiting for a new response.

Glad you got it fixed, I'm not sure why it says you have a a dvd drive, but the crash dump is just part of the OS.

sorry about that

wasnt trying to be rude

i always think if i edit my psot, people may miss the new edit..
coz they may not recheck old posts.

as for the crash dump.. maybe its when my computer wouldnt start up after i tried to instal ubuntu..
then it went into sum scan mode to try to fix itself
it took so long, i assumed it maty have crashed, so i removed the battery so it woud turn off, then i restarted, and it seemed ok
but maybe thats wat this 'crash dump' is
taking up a bit of memory i guess
