Hi,

I've gone through almost all previously posted threads on this topic but none of them really helped me fix the problem. Hence i chose to post it again.

Laptop: Dell Studio 1558 (core i5)
OS: Win 7 Home Premium (pre-installed) 64-bit
Free space on C: = 12GB
No Virus and malware exists

1. "Windows Update" recommended to install SP1 and i chose to go ahead but it failed with error 0x80004005.

2. Then i downloaded windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe (~920MB) and tried to install but failed at 99% (configuring service pack) with same error 0x80004005

3. Then i followed Windows 7 SP1 installation failed with error 0x80004005 E-FAIL - Microsoft Reduce Customer Effort Center - Site Home - TechNet Blogs and did the below

a. Installed "System Update Readiness Tool" (Windows6.1-KB947821-v12-x64.msu - ~ 320MB)
b. ran "sfc/scannow" - it found few errors and fixed automatically.
c. Verified if "0x8004a029" found in cbs.log but it does NOT have any
d. Disabled Symantec AV completely
e. Tried again applying SP1 but again failed at 99% with same error 0x80004005.

Wonder if anyone had success with SP1 inst and I don't want to do fresh reinstallation of OS as I have lot of applications.

Please suggest.
TIA

Hello!

Please create a new folder on your Desktop called LOGS.

Copy into that new folder the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder, and the C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log file.

Right click on your new LOGS folder > Send to > Compressed (Zipped) folder, and upload it here for me.

Thanks a lot!

Richard

Thanks Zigzag for your reply.

If you can see my post, i already pasted that link and followed it except for last option (Perform an inplace upgrade of Windows). Do you mean to say i have only this option left out? If yes, please suggest me how can i do this?

Txs again,

If you have disabled Symantec completely, turn on Windows firewall in Services and try again.

Hi Jacee,

Windows firewall and Defender were always enabled and ON on my laptop (even when Symantec was running). I made sure Firewall was ON before applying SP1.

Thanks,

Thanks Jecee,

As i stated in my OP, i followed that link and since "0x8004a029" not found in CBS.log i did NOT do any modifications to registry. I just verified now and MaxNumFilters is set to 8 (default).

Do you want me to change it to 14 and try applying SP1?

Pl confirm.

The default on my computer is 8 too. SP1 installed with no problem on mine, so don't bother changing the filter drivers unless you back up the registry..

Hello again!

Firstly, my greatest thanks to MowGreen for the help he has given me in interpreting these logs. We both found the same line in the log, and he explained it to me :)

Firstly, CBS.log.

Indeed, you are correct that you cannot find your error code, however, you can find it in a .cabbed persist.

Is this the case? How much free hard disk space do you have? You say 12GB?

However, I find it very difficult to believe that you don't have enough space to move the bootmgr around. Either we should take from another header, or something odd is at work!

What multiboot configuration do you have set up?

Anyway, on to Windowsupdate.log:

Thanks MowGreen!

What version of Symmantec do/did you have installed? Is it a corporate edition? Where did you get it from?

Thanks a lot!

Thanks Niemiro for your detailed investigation.

Firstly, CBS.log.

Indeed, you are correct that you cannot find your error code, however, you can find it in a .cabbed persist.

Does it mean that I should make changes to registry (MaxNumFilters and removing unnecessary filter drivers) ?

However, I find it very difficult to believe that you don't have enough space to move the bootmgr around. Either we should take from another header, or something odd is at work!

What multiboot configuration do you have set up?

I have C: (NTFS) 100GB - 12G free space
D: (NTFS) - 250G - 1GB free space

I have Ubuntu as dual-boot which is actually installed on D:\Ubuntu folder (not separate Linux Partition). Also am using Win7 Boot loader. I can uninstall Ubuntu completely if req.

What version of Symantec do/did you have installed? Is it a corporate edition? Where did you get it from?

Symantec client Security (corporate) 10.2 - Got it from my office. I can completely uninstall it if req.

Thanks again!
Prvn

Hello Prvn!

Firstly, CBS.log.

Indeed, you are correct that you cannot find your error code, however, you can find it in a .cabbed persist.
Does it mean that I should make changes to registry (MaxNumFilters and removing unnecessary filter drivers) ?

No, don't make that change yet.

Not quite yet, but maybe soon.

Now that is interesting. MowGreen told me that you would almost certainly have a Corporate Edition installed. I am not quite sure how he knew, but he is magic! He strongly recommends uninstalling it.

You need to go back to your office, and try to find the Removal Tool.

Most of the removal tools are here: Download and run the Norton Removal Tool to uninstall your Norton product | Norton Support

But I don't think that that webpage includes the corporate edition which you have installed. Is that correct? Exactly what name and version do you have installed?

Thanks a lot!

Finally, i had success with SP1 installation.

I uninstalled Symantec AV from add/remove programs and then ran Norton_Removal_Tool.exe which did the cleanup.

Rebooted and installed SP1. It worked straight away.

Thank you Niemiro and all others who helped me fix the issue.

Now, can I install Symantec AV or do you suggest "MS Security Essentials" instead?

Thanks again,
Prvn

Hello Prvn!

That is truly excellent news!

My advice would be to stick clear of that Corporate Edition on home computers. However, whether you go back to Symantec is your choice. Personally, I wouldn't, and a very many would have a much stronger view saying "no" to going back. I think go to MSE (I use it and like it a lot )
