Dual SpeedFan +5 Readings

Maybe it has always been there, but I don't remember it being so. As seen in the screenshot, SF shows two different +5 voltages, one normal and one high. There is the option to display - 5 voltage, but I have that disabled. My main concern is the high +5 voltage, since it is beyond the 10% tolerance level.

Checking the Configure tab show identical information for both values...except the outputs. The question is whether this actually indicates a problem with my power supply. The question is significant, since I intend to use this PS in my new build in the near future.

These values normally follow a pattern when displayed. The top +5v is almost certainly the +5v display I believe the second one ( I have marked it ) is what is marked as Standby on my display (see pic )
I do not know what the tolerances are for this tho

Hmm, that answer most of my question. The only thing left is how significant the second value is, and how much tolerance it has? Curiously, if both values are the same in both of your screenshots, I wonder why they have such different voltages?

No, sorry I used to but eventually gave it up for Everest
My program is AIDA64 formerly Everest
I wouldn't rule out a bad reading by SF have you tried contacting the SF support? I can only say good things about Alfredo Milani Comparetti he went out of his way to help me when I had problems.

Huh! I installed the trial verison of Aida64, and it doesn't give any value for standby:

EDIT: I just checked the label on my PS, and it does have two 5v outputs, and the second is suffixed vsb, which I assume means standby, so I wonder why Aida64 doesn't show it? Exactly what is the standby voltage for...the failure of the normal 5v output? If so, then that extra voltage may not be important until a primary voltage failure occurs, and then the extra voltage could be damaging.

I do not know why it doesn't show up in Aida But it does seem to confirm that the +5v is OK
The Standby 5v as I understand it is used for your Power switch, keyboard and mouse and possibly USB ports

I just Googled the definition of the 5v standby, and it isn't what I thought, it is the power going to the system, when the power is otherwise off. I checked the hardware monitor in the BIOS, but it doesn't show anything for the standby power either. In one thread, it was recommended to check it with a DVM, but where could that be measured, and if SF is accurate, is that reading something to be concerned about?

I cannot say mate but I am sure that I read somewhere that it should be OK as long as it is under 6.5v. You really need to ask someone else with more experience in these things

seekermeister, I think speedfan reads different chipsets differently. I'm not sure why. I used to use it but would get different readings on different chipsets. I installed it on this p67 chipset and it wouldn't read hardly anything and what it did read was wrong. It showed my +12V at 7.6V. If that was true, the system wouldn't even post. On my AMD890 system I got different readings from SF and hardware monitor.

I just took pooch's suggestion, and sent an enquiry to Alfredo about this (hope that he's not having a bad day, or is on vacation). I do understand that SF is far from perfect, but I continue using it primarily because it is the only monitor that I'm aware of that can provide a continous reading in the System Tray icon...of course, being free doesn't hurt either.

I just tried it, primarily because I thought that you were saying that it would display System Tray readings, but if it does, I didn't find that option. It does not display anything for + 5vsb either. The only thing that I particularly like about it, is that it shows both the system and CPU temps as cooler than SF does, but it doesn't show temps for my hard drives or graphics card.

It obviously depends on who made or how the motherboard is designed with regards to sensor readings and the software reading it. I note that I don't have the +5 standby readings that pooch shows in his AIDA reading, yet I do have two +5 voltage readings in Speedfan





And we're (pooch and I) using the same version of AIDA64 - 1.70.1400.

Your +12v and -5v reading in SF are obviously wrong. -5 doesn't surprise me, because it doesn't work for me either, and I have it disabled, but +12v does, and that is important to monitor. Curious that your +5vsb also seems out of whack, but in the opposite direction of mine.

A 5v standby is common to most electronics, like a TV. It is what keeps the set ready to receive the remote signal, or send the power on command when the power button is pressed. It will also keep the clock time in a TV.

The voltage is not a run voltage, that is, it isn't sent to CPU or other chipsets to maintain operation. It is just there to keep the PC ready for the press of the power button, and possibly for USB port power as mentioned. There is likely a 5v voltage regulator specifically tasked to provide this 5v standby, and the voltage could likely range from approx. 3.9v to 7.5V. I wouldn't be concerned. A Guy

I haven't investigated it as I typically don't use Speedfan. I just installed it to see what you were looking at.

To be honest I never really understood Speedfan and all it's workings thus when I did use it I only used it for it's temp reading ability but found that Core Temp or Real Temp was just as useful for me, and less cluttered.

Anyway AIDA64 (formally Everest) gives me everything I need for sensor monitoring/readings.

As for the readings being off, well that was your complaint too

Sorry, I didn't know you wanted a tray display, Speecy can't do that yet. It shows HDD temp under S.M.A.R.T. if you have it enabled in BIOS.
