Hi All

I am also a first time poster experiencing a problem with error: ::{26EE0668-A00A-44D7-9371-BEB064C98683}.
Maybe it started a few days ago. I remember talking to my Dad on Skype through the inbuilt laptop speakers (Dell Studio XPS 1640, x64, Windows7 Premium sp.1).
The next day, I had lost audio completely, save for the occasional snatch from Skype sign in, or song in WMP.
The problem escalated say, 2 days later, when I couldn't access documents, pictures, music, games, computer, control panel or devices and printers. Every attempt gets the above error code and a dialogue box thus: [Window Title]
Explorer.EXE

Contents

No such interface supported

[OK]

However, I could initially view photos through applications like Paint.NET.

So, I trawled Google for solutions to this issue. My drivers are up to date. sfc/ scannow gets to 5%, then Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.
In the little 'Solve PC issues' flag I have some new messages: 'Troubleshoot problem with a device or driver' and 'Address a problem with Skype'. Both of these do jack.
Hmm, system restore perhaps? Tried that, and now I can't even see my photos through paint.NET.
These are of GREAT importance to me. The rest of my computer can eat a brick. I just want the photos.

Oh, can't create another profile, it won't let me. Also, this problem is evident on both admin and guest account.

Please help me recover my photos, then I can set my laptop alight and return it to Dell.

Just a thought but I would download malwarebytes and run it to make sure this isnt malware.

A hardware problem is a whole lot easier to repair.

The error code may be related to a corrupt user profile. I found this answer to the exact error code on Microsoft TechNet Forums (it worked):

"Although you could perform a System File Checker scan (by entering "sfc /scannow" into the Command Prompt) when facing such issues, usually the best way of dealing with a corrupted user profile is to create a new one and migrate all of your settings and data over, either by using the Easy Transfer Wizard or manually."

Did the quick scan solve the issue Squinter? I would certainly do a Full scan as backup to confirm the system is clean.

This has solved the ::{26EE0668-A00A-44D7-9371-BEB064C98683} error message showing. Thank you for that :)

BUT I still have the error box popping up: [Window Title]

[OK], and cannot mount the folders mentioned earlier.

Lack of sound through factory speakers continues to a point where I've started wondering if this is a faulty speaker or internal connection issue?
I'm still concerned that I can't even locate to my picture folders using paint.NET, whereas I could before I tried a system recover as recommended in a thread somewhere. I KNOW that wouldn't affect those. Surely..?

Unfortunately I am having difficulty creating a New User account to migrate folders to, as the problem I'm experiencing renders ALL of these functions unusable.

Thank you very much for all your help so far!

Ok, so to prevent any unnecessary musings on the missing photographs line, I had a hunch to download Picasa. This is bringing up all of the images I have previously been unable to locate or mount folders for. Phew!

The question is, how to safely migrate them from Picasa to say, and external Hard Drive or better, CD when I am unable to access these once attached? Ha! And to add insult to injury, I just tried to connect my WD External HDD and it makes the kind of spool up and then click noise I associate with read/write heads being S.N.A.F.U. About the 3rd WD branded product to do this to me!

Will buy some blank C.D's tomorrow and let you know if they're recognised or not. :banghead:

I'm unfamiliar with Picassa but its program folder should have an images folder or something like that. Hopefully you can copy them from there.
A clicking HDD is not a good sign :( and you're correct about it being the heads maybe. You can try a WD diagnostic on it.

First Squinter,

Use a USB stick or an external drive for backing up your movies, music, etc.

Cheaper in the long run, much more flexible.

Using cd/dvd for backup is a thing of the past.

Second, let's see if I can find the link for you:

On inserting removable media, such as a USB stick or External Hard Drive, I am not able to connect to the device at all. Autoplay does not seem to be enabled anymore either?
I cannot access anything to make any changes as everything with My Computer as the root folder will not open.

I am aware that we don't back up to disk anymore, but I am too wary of the fickle nature of the HDD now, with 3 failures over 2 different storage devices, working out at an average rate of one fail per year.
