Firefox 3.5 RC3 Released

3.5 seems a tiny bit faster, still isn't as smooth/fast as Chrome.

Well, it isn't the final version yet so things may change. I personally haven't been able to get into chrome. I have tried it a few times and continue to be turned off by it. I downloaded Opera for a couple days and enjoyed it more than Chrome... am I missing something?

I use Chrome purely to surf, if I'm going to be doing any FLV captures, streaming or other browser tool related activities I use FireFox.

All I ever do is surf as well, like forums, my websites, email, etc... I guess I figure that just using one browser for everything is best and firefox can do that the best overall.

You know...I want to fall back in love with Firefox and so far I have been impressed with the 3.5 release candidates, but Chrome swept me off my feet with their 2.0 release. These RC's just haven't been enough to sway me back full-time. I simply use Firefox for sites that Chrome has difficulty rendering.

The sheer speed of Chrome blew me away, and I have been an avid FF user for years. As soon as Siber ports Roboform to it, I will switch permanently.

To make Firefox 3.5 even faster as far as internet speed is concerned, install this add-on :

Fasterfox Lite
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/9148

By default, it is set to Turbo Charged, and it makes my browsing a lot faster. It is called Lite because it includes performance and network tweaks for Firefox but without the Prefetching.

There is also a Fasterfox add-on which does the same performance and network tweaks but also includes webpage prefetching.

I dont need prefetching so i use the lite version.

Hope this helps.

Just a note of caution, while I also use the add-on its experimental right now.

I love ff, but ever sense IE has been showing all of it's tabs in the start menu I've been using it a lot more... I just like being able to WinKey + # to the tab I want... Instead with FF I winkey + # (or alt tab) then ctrl tab to the tab I want, or if I'm using a mouse I only get to see the front page of each ff instance (I can't help it, I open multiple instances with multiple tabs)

The author of this add-on explains why it is dubbed "experimental" :

" Long Description

This addon would not be experimental if it wasn't for the fact that the lead Mozilla developers don't like what this addon is able to do. This addon is stable but was sandboxes due to its excessive abilities.

The "Lite" in Fasterfox Lite does not mean less performance, it is just a reference to the removal of the obtrusive prefetching ability in Fasterfox. Prefetching was removed for this Lite version because it wasted a lot of server bandwidth as well as causing unnecessary server load. "

So this means it is not experimental because it is harmful but because it is so powerful.

You owe it to yourself to at least try it, if you don't like it then you can uninstall it from FF.

;)

Honestly I dont care that its experimental, it works. I use experimental, force things to run that aren't supposed to by using nightly tools tester, etc. Your absolutely correct just wanted to sound a note of caution for others in case

I rather stay on firefox because there is no xmarks ( foxmarks ) support yet, I hate to keep manually syncing the bookmarks lol

If you download the nightly tester tools, you can force install it. Xmarks works fine for me when force installed.

Or if you don't want to install the addon.

  • Type about:config into Firefox's address bar and click the "I'll be careful, I promise!" button.
  • Right-click anywhere. Choose New>Boolean. Make the name of your new config value extensions.checkCompatibility and set it to false.

Export is easy enough for me. I backup my Bookmarks about every week to two weeks. Importing them is just as easy, however I don't Import them to IE8 as IE8 doesn't like Symbols. You can put the Bookmarks in IE8, but when you try to remove them you'll get a file error and there is no way outside of a format reload to get them out of Favorites.

Chrome is a joke! How it is setup and layed out. Firefox 3.5 RC3 seems to be completly stable for me. I just hope the Open Download (similar to run file in IE) gets updated to be compatible. The nice thing about 3.5 is it tells you the compatibility before you install a plugin and in fact blocks plugins that don't work.

Yes but some blocked things will work, especially blocked themes.

Thats why we have that nifty little 'Nightly Tester Tools' addon that will let you bypass that block. :D
